The Year I turned to Jesus. Abiding Together through the Book of Romans: Romans chapter 5 & 6.

Hi Friends! God and His timing is always perfect! Last week unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete my written lesson in the way I hoped. So today by God’s grace, I am asking the Lord to help me tackle both Romans 5 & 6. Both of these chapters cover SO MANY amazing TRUTHS, so I humbly ask God for His wisdom to share the TRUTH of HIS WORD with You!

Ask in PRAYER

Thank you Lord for your amazing WORD! You ALWAYS have so much truth in Your Word for us. Thank you our Creator God, God of the Universe that You would be so kind to give us Your Word to know You, Your Will, and who we are in You. We pray that through the study of Your Word today that we can better serve You and the purposes You have for us. We love You Lord. Amen

B is for Bible

Romans chapter 5 has been one of my favorite chapters so far! I love that it is basically the summary of all that we have established so far in the first 5 chapters in verse 1. WE ARE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH!

‘Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, ‘ Romans 5:1

So to jog your memory so far in Romans we have already read:

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “ But the righteous will live by faith .” Romans 1:17 (This is the famous verse that Martin Luther read when He finally understood that He was saved by faith and not by works! Praise Jesus for this amazing Good News for all of us! You can read more about this here!)

And we have also read: For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God , and it was counted to him as righteousness” Romans 4:3

Abraham a real person created by God, known as our father of our faith (see Romans 4) and understood to be in the genealogy of Jesus Christ (see Matthew 1:2). Was made righteous by his faith! So praise God that we can also now understand that we are too made righteous by faith. Thank you Jesus that we are saved by placing our faith in You, and not by what WE DO! Thank you God that Romans 1-5 helps us understand this essential truth of our Christian faith.

BREATHE DEEPLY UNDERSTANDING OUR SALVATION IS BY GRACE!!

And praise God that right after this reminder of our justification (made right before a Holy God) in Romans 5:1, the Lord through Paul kindly reminds us that through Christ Jesus and His forgiveness of our sins by HIS DEATH on the cross, we gain peace with God!! Praise God!!!

‘ Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. ‘ Romans 5:1-2

I listened to one of my favorite Pastors, Pastor Gilchrist of University Fellowship Church, and he helped me understand this peace which we gain in Christ. And, he did such an amazing job at explaining this so I definitely recommend listening to his Romans 5 sermons that are actually broken up into 3 sermons here. Pastor Brett pointed out that Yes this peace is a feeling that we can feel at times, but more than that; it’s the standing we now have as born again believers with God. Before this gift of faith from Christ, we were not at peace with God. In fact, we were actually at war with God. Without Jesus Christ we were God’s enemy! But this is what THE AMAZING GIFT of JESUS CHRIST is to the believer! While we were enemies, Jesus Christ died for us, and through His death we can be made right, “reconciled” to a Holy God, and we will forever stand in His Grace. NOW that WE have peace with God through faith!

WE WERE UNGODLY ENEMIES TO GOD, yet HE STILL DIED FOR US! 😭 We didn’t earn it, or work for it, we just had to accept it and place our trust in Him, and we were able to receive it! We have GRACE, PEACE, & FORGIVENESS in CHRIST JESUS!!

✨✨✨✨✨✨I’M pausing HERE- because if this passage of truth doesn’t move your heart. I encourage you to stop and pray to Jesus to understand it & receive it! This is the GOSPEL right here!! This is the Hope it which we have!✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

In Christ Jesus we were saved from the wrath of God, because of Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross! EVEN though we did NOTHING to deserve it!!

THIS IS WHAT JESUS DID FOR US & BY HIS GRACE THROUGH FAITH THIS WHAT WE RECEIVE!!

What an amazing reminder of what our salvation does for us in this life and forever more!
Pastor Brett shared a story about a time when he was caught in a field fire, and as he was trying to help extinguish the fire he knew to go to the land that had already been scorched with flames. So with flames all around him he was able to tackle the fire with a hose from that spot because he stood in a safe place that had already been scorched with flames. This picture was to describe how securely we stand in grace as a believer in Christ Jesus. The flames of the enemy cannot consume us.

Jesus did all of this for us even though we were sinners, and then because of HIS LOVE for us He gave us the most MIRACULOUS gift. HIS HOLY SPIRIT!!! ✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. ‘ Romans 5:3-11

AMEN! Thank you Jesus for ALL THAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR THOSE WHO PLACE THEIR TRUST IN YOU!

The Book of Genesis presents the Historical account of Creation and the first man Adam. Just as the Gospel presents the Historical account of Jesus’s birth and resurrection.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:18
‘And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” ‘ Matthew 28:9-10

I love Romans 5:12-21 Because these verses explain the importance of understanding Adam. The literal real Adam from Genesis in relationship to our real Jesus Christ. This understanding is near and dear to my heart as understanding the entirety of scripture as FACT apart from accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, has been one of the biggest blessings in my walk as a Christian. How can we actually believe in Jesus Christ born to a virgin as told in The Gospels, believe in all the miracles, and then also believe in the resurrection, but not believe in a literal Adam? It doesn’t make sense! And Paul, inspired by God, presents his case:

‘Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification…… For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.’ Romans 5:12-17,21

Even this week, I was blessed by revisiting the creation account, and reflecting on the perfection of God’s creation that was found in the Garden before sin.

Imagine lions laying peacefully with lambs, dinosaurs walking side by side with our first parents. Never even the fear of a bee sting! Everything was perfectly “good” just as God had declared it before resting and blessing the 7th day. But then sadly the day came when temptation came. And Adam & Eve sinned. Their sin led to the very first murder, an animal killed as a sacrifice to cover their nakedness. This first animal sacrifice was a foreshadowing of the sacrificial system that would come in Moses’s day, and of course a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice that would come in Jesus Christ.

Adam was a type of Christ, in the way that in his sin, we are all sinners. But unlike Adam, in Jesus, His one act of righteousness by dying on the cross for us, we can all through faith have eternal life! Adam’s sin brought our enemy, death. But Christ who was sinless, His death on the cross defeated death for us all. And we can all live forever more in the grace and peace that we stand in when we believe in Christ!

CHAPTER 6 DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE TO GOD!
Yay we made it to Chapter 6!

I love Chapter 6 because it now begins a new section of Romans that is assuring us of who we are now that we are in Christ. And, the sanctification (the process of becoming Holy) that will now take place in the heart of the TRUE believer!

Now in Christ our heart desires to live a NEW WAY!

‘What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin…. For one who has died has been set free from sin. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. ‘ Romans 6:1-7,10-11

So this is what our baptism literally symbolizes. Before Christ we were enslaved to sin. We were enemies to God just as we just learned in Romans 5. But, now by faith in Christ our old self, our sin nature has died. It was buried, and our old nature is dead. And now, just as Christ Jesus was raised from the dead, we as born again believers are raised into the newness of life in the grace of JESUS! We have now been set FREE from the sin that enslaves us. We have been set free from this world, and the enemy! We are no longer dead, WE ARE NOW ALIVE to GOD in Christ Jesus.

Dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. ‘ Romans 6:11 Think of your baptism dunking under the water, dead to sin, and rising above to breathe new air. Alive to God in Christ Jesus!!

YAYAYAYAYAYAAYYAAY!!!! Praise Jesus, this is the most wonderful news!!!!

Romans 6:12-23 then explains that since in Christ we have been made dead to sin. We now have a new master! We use to be a slave to sin and the death and destruction of this world. But now we are sons and daughters to King Jesus and get to live out our royalty!

Hallelujah!!! Jesus Christ has freed us from the power of sin & now we can give ourselves to righteous living so that we can walk in the Holiness of Christ that leads us to eternal life!

Investigate


I love these verses because they encourage us that we have a new master reining over our life. And our Master is good, He is wise, He is Holy, He is Sovereign, and above all He is God!

And now that we are made new by His blood, we sit securely in His grace, and we now have the Holy Spirit in us! And our 2 Corinthians 5:17 truth comes to mind!

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

Yes Praise God!! And let us encourage one another to walk in this newness, and to not go back to our old ways.

This passage from 2 Peter came to mind warning us to not return to our former way of life:

‘But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves. Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed. For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment. And God did not spare the ancient world—except for Noah and the seven others in his family. Noah warned the world of God’s righteous judgment. So God protected Noah when he destroyed the world of ungodly people with a vast flood. Later, God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned them into heaps of ashes. He made them an example of what will happen to ungodly people. But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people around him. Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day. So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment. He is especially hard on those who follow their own twisted sexual desire, and who despise authority. These people are proud and arrogant, daring even to scoff at supernatural beings without so much as trembling. But the angels, who are far greater in power and strength, do not dare to bring from the Lord a charge of blasphemy against those supernatural beings. These false teachers are like unthinking animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed. They scoff at things they do not understand, and like animals, they will be destroyed. Their destruction is their reward for the harm they have done. They love to indulge in evil pleasures in broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a stain among you. They delight in deception even as they eat with you in your fellowship meals. They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse. They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong. But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey rebuked him with a human voice. These people are as useless as dried-up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness. They brag about themselves with empty, foolish boasting. With an appeal to twisted sexual desires, they lure back into sin those who have barely escaped from a lifestyle of deception. They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.”’ 2 Peter 2:1-22

Dwell on what we read & apply it to our life!


Wow what a sad and disgusting image. Returning to our sin after tasting the goodness of Christ is like a dog returning to its vomit. Such a perfect reminder for us to lean into Jesus and cry out to Him for help so we can flee from temptation and walk in the TRUTH of who we are NOW in Christ.

I decided to read that whole passage from 2 Peter, because of the warning for us against false teachers that try to get us entangled in sin again. False teachers want us to return to our vomit like dogs. So we have to be discerning.

In this life we are going to find A LOT of people who call themselves Christians that say and do all sorts of things that will encourage us to be entangled in things that will bring us back to bondage with sin.

From entangling us with legalism, works, fear of man, being people pleasers, to being popular, and doing a host of things that the Bible clearly says is wrong and making them “OKAY.” Or even denying parts of God’s Word as true, historical, or calling them old fashioned. God tells us to flee from temptation, because we should run from what false teachers have to offer. They say they offer freedom with new ideas or their own reasoning, but a teaching that goes against God’s word is actually just enslaving us back to sin. False teachers are enemies to God and they want to drag us down with them.

So, I urge all of us to spend time in God’s word and in prayer so that we can discern lies from the TRUTH found in God’s Word!

And lastly, dwelling on the fact that our master is King Jesus! Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that we don’t sin at times. But, it does mean that our heart doesn’t want to sin anymore. We are NOW SLAVES to Jesus! This might sound weird, but this is a good thing.

I thought about it like this today, when we were enemies to God, it was like we were tied to the enemy as he is going down into the pit of hell. We were literally being dragged slowly to hell in bondage to our sin, because we were slaves to a master whose final home is in hell.

But in Christ Jesus, we are slaves to a Master who sits at the righthand of the Father on the throne in Heaven. We are tied to Him. So as we are being sanctified we are slowly being drawn up to heaven with Him. We might bump around from time to time running into the things of this world on our way up, but eventually we will make our way up to heaven to be united with our Master there! And praise God, our tie to our Master Jesus can never be broken or separated! 

“Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:33-39 

Engage in Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you so much for what You have done for us! We thank you that You have made us dead to our sin, but alive in You! Please forgive us for the ways we have returned to our old self, and please help us walk in a manner that is worthy of Your calling, and our new standing in You. We pray that our lives will bring glory to You. Amen

Yay friends we are so happy that you are here! SO SO HAPPY!! 😀❤️😀

I have to be honest that this chapter has been SO challenging for me. Although I have really enjoyed reading it, studying it, listening to it, listening to podcasts about it, reading study notes about it. I HAVE REALLY LOVED IT!! BUT I’ve just had such a hard time putting it all together! I guess I just want to say so much, and there is so much history that I’ve been challenged with how to pull all my thoughts, what I’m learning, and what feels like is REALLY IMPORTANT theology together, and then trying to make it relevant for teenagers.

SO LET’S try something new!! LESS ABOUT ME, and Let’s talk about you! 😆

How do you feel about your time in God’s Word lately? Have you spent much time with God over the past couple weeks? What are you learning from Romans chapter 4?

And, I’m not asking you to judge you, as the reminder from Romans 8:1, that Lord-willing we will read together in a few weeks, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.“; but, I’m asking because I want to encourage you, and I too want to be encouraged too!

We have to encourage one another to pray against the stumbling blocks in our life. Maybe something is preventing you from getting into God’s Word and making time for Him. Maybe for others like myself this week, you are spending time with God, but are still having a hard time understand the things God’s Word is supposed to be teaching you, or maybe struggling putting those things into practice. And, maybe there are a bunch of other things going on with friends, health, school, depression, anxiety, stress, or all of this combined?!?!!

So for now let’s just give ALL of these “things” to the Lord.

Let’s call upon the one who sees us in our sin, in our sadness, in our joy, in our silliness, in our frustrations- and still loves us SO MUCH!

SO let’s PRAY!! And seek God and HIS WORD TOGETHER!! He is SO MUCH BIGGER THAN ALL OF OUR STRUGGLES AND SHORT COMINGS!!

Ask in Prayer

Lord Jesus, please help us to seek You and Your Word with Your understanding. Open our eyes, heart, and mind to know You. Help us God to cast all of our sin and struggles to You. Thank you for ALL that You provide daily for us. AND THANK YOU GOD for your relentless love. Lord please reveal yourself to us through Your glorious Word. And, please God teach us how we can serve You and those around us better! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

B is for BIBLE

ROMANS CHAPTER 4: Abraham Justified by Faith.

Google search justified

For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. (3-5)

Romans 4:3-5 tells us that Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith and not because of HIS work, but because his FAITH IN GOD who forgives sinners!!

Praise God!

These 3 verses Romas 4:3, 4 & 5 MEAN SO MUCH – BUT THEY ARE ALSO SO SIMPLE!!

As we step into INVESTIGATING GOD’s Word, and as I’m going to attempt to try to explain some of the “MUCH” first, but then I really pray that the Lord will help me to focus on the simple.

INVESTIGATE. God, People, Self, Point to Jesus. Other verses come to mind?

  1. Who is Abraham?
Abraham’s Family, written by Albert Hari, Charles Singer, Caroline Morton & Edited by John D. Morris

We first learn about Abraham, and actually his name was Abram at the time when we 1st meet him in Genesis 11: 26.

***And, this is the reminder that the entire BIBLE is the Word of God, which is Jesus, and that’s why Paul is talking about Abraham and about his faith in God, and Paul, through the Holy Spirit is explaining what this means for our relationship with Jesus Christ! The whole Bible goes together, and tells one story, and we cannot forgot that!***

So, in Genesis 11:31 we read that Terah is the father of Abram. Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they settled there. Genesis 11:31

Then in Genesis 12 we read that God appears to Abram, “The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

“I will make you into a great nation,

and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you,

and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

will be blessed through you.”

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.” Genesis 12:1-4

Oh praise God for this very important passage in Scripture. The John MacArthur study Bible says, “This passage is the promise whose fulfillment extends all through Scripture.” This is called the Abrahamic Covenant, and it’s an everlasting covenant that contains 4 elements. 1. seed (descendants) 2. land 3. nation 4. divine blessing and protection.

The NIV Life Application Study Bible says. “When God called him, Abram moved out in faith from Ur to Harran and finally to Canaan. God then established a covenant with Abram, telling him that he would found a great nation. Not only would this nation be blessed, God said, but the other nations of the earth would be blessed through Abram’s descendants. The people of Israel, the nation that would come from Abram, were to follow God and influence those whom they came in contact. But the greatest blessing of all is that through Abram’s family tree, Jesus Christ was born to save humanity. Through Christ, people can have a personal relationship with God and be blessed beyond measure.

AMEN!!!

This is WHY all of this is so IMPORTANT!!!

Do you guys know the children’s church song, “Father Abraham, had many sons, many sons had Father Abraham. I am one of them, and so are you. So let’s just praise the Lord.” I loved learning this song in church serving in kids ministry.

Abraham is the father of faith, the Father of the nation of Israel, and in the Gospel of Matthew he is listed as the first father in the Genealogy of Jesus Christ!

If we go to Matthew 1:1-2 We can read The Genealogy of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!

1  The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2  Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.

Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, in Romans 4, is bringing it back to our Father Abraham, who is the great great great father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to show us now and the jews and christians at the time, that Faith was always the thing that counted people righteous, and not works.

And we first see this in Genesis 15:6 where Moses, inspired by God tells us that “Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”

SO, I think this is why I feel the weight of this passage. Because not only through these verses do we see God’s promise of descendants, land, nation, and eternal blessings, which I don’t even feel equipped to unpack all of that at this time. (Although I can clearly see that many things that are happening in the world currently hinge on these passages in the Bible. Which is also why we TRULY NEED TO ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER to keep diving into GOD’s WORD, and truly become disciples/ leaners, because if we just keep sitting back and letting others tell us things instead of reading it for ourselves, and lazily sitting around scrolling just to be entertained we are going to miss what is clear before our eyes! THE BIBLE IS REAL, GOD’S HISTORY IS TRUE, AND HIS WORD WILL BE FULFILLED). So, I rightly feel the weight of this passage, because we are diving into the overall arching theme of the ENTIRE BIBLE!

But, praise God as I’m writing this now, the Lord reminds me of this:

But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14

Jesus wants even little children to come to Him, So we don’t have to understand every part of History and even His Word to understand the heart of God.

As we look back at Romans 4, we see in verse 6, Paul talks about King David, another pillar in the Jewish faith.

Romans 4:6-8: “Just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered, blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

Paul is actually quoting what David wrote about in Psalm 32:1-2, and he wrote this after his awful episode of adultery, and murderous cover up found in 2 Samuel 11. This is truly awful stuff!

But, Paul is bringing it up here, because David is sharing that firsthand he knows true blessing come from being forgiven of sin, and having faith in the only God who can do so, Jesus Christ!

So you might say, wait? David didn’t know Jesus. That was before his time. Wait wasn’t David Jesus’s great-great grandfather?

Well,

  1. We talked about this last time in Romans 3:25-26 “For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.” Because Jesus is part of our triune God, those who were looking ahead to the Messiah in faith, God included them in the forgiveness of sins when He died on the cross!
  2. Jesus Himself points this out to the Pharisees in Matthew 22:41-46, and quoting David from Psalm 110:1: Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They replied, “He is the son of David.” Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’? For David said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’ Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”No one could answer him. And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

So David had faith in His Messiah, that when he repented of the WORST of sins, that he was forgiven.

Abraham was counted righteous by his faith, not by works. Which is a great thing for him and for us, because we can read ahead to Genesis 16, to see how our father of faith Abraham also fell into the trap of sin and doubting God’s word:

So this makes my heart so sad. How many times in our life do we in our impatience and fear turn to our own devices, our own control, our own comfort instead of turning to the Lord for His patience, His truth, and His timing? AND WE MESS IT ALL UP?

IS IT COMFORTING knowing that even our pillar of faith in God, Father Abraham, doubted God’s promise or maybe the means by which God would deliver His promise. And, this lack of faith/ trust in God’s word led to a TERRIBLE compromise in his marriage and this led to drastic consequences not only for their marriage but for generations!

YET, PRAISE GOD!! We are reminded that for Abraham, for David, and for ourselves nothing catches God by surprise. God’s plan continues to go on exactly how God has planned, despite our failures. And praise Jesus, we are counted righteous by our faith in the one who forgives our sin. Jesus Christ!

So I have to ask you another question. Have you yet realized that you need a Savior?

Jesus can’t save someone who doesn’t need to be saved!

Jesus himself pointed this out in Mark 2:17

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jesus came to save SINNERS! Which our last session Romans 3:23 reminded us that we all are! For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23

Okay there is still so MUCH to say, but I know we are running out of time. But, we have to quickly touch on this last point because, it’s so important!

CIRCUMCISiON. 😂 LOL. I’m actually not going to get into the details of that. You can ask your parents.

But, I will focus on what I think is the point of this very important piece of scripture.

Circumcision was a sign that Abraham already had faith and that God had already accepted him and declared him to be righteous—even before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have faith but have not been circumcised. They are counted as righteous because of their faith. Romans 4:11

Because of Abraham’s faith HE WALKED IN OBEDIENCE into the things God was calling him to do. (This is similar to baptism today!) This was definitely IMPERFECT obedience, as Abraham clearly messed up at times as we just read in Genesis 16, (and I want to quickly point out that things like seeking God and His word would have possibly prevented him from making those mistakes), but Abraham CLEARLY stepped out in obedience to his faith. He moved to a new land, He walked in obedience to have him and his household circumcised in Genesis 17, and we haven’t even touched on how He trusted God in taking his son to be sacrificed in Genesis 22 (and we definitely will have to unpack that more on another day). But the point is that FAITH by God’s grace, the gift of faith that counted him righteous, justified him before our Holy God, and this FAITH lead to Him walking in Obedience.

So, as we move into DWELL. We have to think how does our faith lead us to obedience?

Dwell on God’s Word then apply it to your life!

So how does faith lead us to obedience?

Let’s go to God’s word! The connections in His Word are so amazing!

TRUE FAITH leads to obedience to God’s WORD. These are our deeds!! Going back to Romans 4:3. We know we aren’t saved by our works, or saved by the law. But if we aren’t changed by our faith, there probably isn’t a TRUE FAITH AT ALL!

SO before we get into HOW our faith in JESUS should impact how we should and should not celebrate Halloween 🤣. I want to quickly share the connection of Martin Luther and Halloween. And this is the Martin Luther of the Reformation, not Martin Luther King Junior. Although he was named after him (and this would be another wonderful history lesson for another day!) But, October 31st is an important day, because that is the day that Martin Luther in 1517, in Wittenberg Germany posted his 95 theses against the Catholic church, you can read a great history lesson on it here, but I’d love to point out that Luther’s faith was completely changed when he finally read Romans 1:17, after a long period of the Bible being kept away from people. In Luther’s day, the Catholic religion hds become entrenched in believing they had to punish themselves, and do many works to earn God’s forgiveness, and righteousness. They were even being taught they could pay the church indulgences for forgiveness. So when Luther finally read these words from the Bible:

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17

HIS LIFE AND HEART WERE DRASTICALLY CHANGED. This is mostly likely the point when Martin Luther was saved! When he realized that the free gift of justification to have a right relationship with a Holy God was by God’s grace through faith and not by works!! Wow what a powerful thing God’s Word did! For Him, and for a generation of Believers! For us today!!

Engage in Prayer

Praise God for these VERY important life changing words that we are studying today!! Who knows by YOU studying God’s word, how it will not only impact your life, can impact a generation of believers!!

I pray that we will not take God’s Word or even this study for granted. Because to have the opportunity to read God’s Word, and engage in a study together is A GIFT! And we truly should thank the Lord for gifting it to us!

“For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, 13while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. 14He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.” Titus 2:11-14

“Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. But—When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.  He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to insist on these teachings so that all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. These teachings are good and beneficial for everyone.” Titus 3:3-8

🎃🎃🎃 🎃🎃🎃 HALLOWEEN 🎃🎃🎃 🎃🎃🎃

Halloween!! Yes, Halloween!! I know this can be a controversial topic in some Christian homes. Answers in Genesis does a good job in the this article here giving a brief Halloween history and asking us how as Christians we should handle it. So, I definitely recommend checking out this important history. Also, Allie Beth Stuckey did a great job sharing her thoughts on Halloween here (make sure you ask your parents permission before you checking out her video on YouTube.)

I won’t spend too much time on this, but I will quickly share that in the past, Halloween has been a holiday that our family has really enjoyed celebrating together. When the kids were younger, we loved dressing them up and taking them trick-or-treating. And, as they got older we thought of it as a great way to connect with friends, our community, and hoping to be a light for the Lord by doing fun things at our house on Halloween. And while, I still think there are certainly FUN and redeemable things to do on Halloween (like going to a Church Harvest party or gathering with friends depending on what you are doing). Something about Halloween HAS been shifting in my heart. I’m not sure if it’s that our culture seems to be getting darker so the decorations we see seem to be growing more violent, dark, demonic, and the celebration of death seems to be growing; or, if its purely something going on in my own heart, in addition to raising 3 teenagers, but likely it’s a combination of many things.

With that said I’d love to point out a few things that can speak to how as Christians we are supposed to live as a followers of Christ Jesus every day, which of course includes Halloween. And, let’s keep in mind ALL that we just learned that we are saved by WHAT?? GRACE THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS. Not by works. BUT that faith leads to WHAT? obedience to His word.

  1. We are ALWAYS called to be holy!

So, in all that we do, whether it’s on the day of Halloween, or any random day, ALL we do should be for the Glory of God as we seek to be more like Him. So this is a great reminder for us to check ourselves in all the activities we engage in, outfits we wear, and conversations we have etc. (And, the reminder we will fall short of God’s standard over and over again- which is why we need to lean into Jesus through His word, prayer, and repentance daily! And also, not put ourselves in our minds better than others by the way we think we obey the law better.)

2. Jesus tells us to be a LIGHT in the darkness!

  • For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. Ephesians 5:8

3. Don’t be like the world – Be transformed!

  • Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
  • Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 1 John 2:15

4. Don’t practice Witchy things.

And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. Deuteronomy 18:10b-12a

5. Death shouldn’t be celebrated. Death is the enemy!

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1 Corinthians 15:26

Our lives as Christians are supposed to look differently than the world’s, we are supposed to be the aroma of Christ, and like our October discipleship question reminds us:

What are you holding on to that is preventing you from growing in your relationship with Jesus? And what are you willing to give up to follow Christ? 

There might be things that “we like doing” or “have done in the past” that CHRIST IS NOW CALLING US TO GIVE UP, to be more like Him. The parties we use to throw or go to, the outfits we wear or maybe want to wear, or even the decorations we have might need to change as we grow and seek Christ.

And, I’m not saying we have to give up Halloween, but maybe? But I am saying there might be things in the way that we celebrate that might need to change as we continue to pursue Jesus. And, this goes for ALL areas of our lives, not just Halloween. WE SHOULD BE CHANGING TO LOOK LESS LIKE OURSELVES AND MORE LIKE JESUS CHRIST.

Remember when the disciples started following Christ, Luke 5:11b tells us … they left everything and followed him.

SOOOOOO,

Is God calling us to give up skimpy costumes, or evil ones?

Is God calling us to take a look at HOW we are celebrating? Are we celebrating death? Is what we are doing dark, evil, or demonic in anyway?

Is God calling us to give up playing games like fortune telling or the ouija board, or watching horror movies?

What does God’s Word say?

As a Christian the way we celebrate Halloween or any activity SHOULD BE different than non-believers, because our aim in life should be to glorify and serve our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

It’s a reminder we are called to be a light always (but of course we are going to do this imperfectly. SO we should give ourselves grace, and certainly should hold this grace out towards others.) And I pray that as we seek the Lord through prayer and reading His Word, He will guide each of us in the steps we should take to look more like Him.

And lastly, I want to be clear. We are saved by God’s grace through faith! WE NEVER WANT TO ADD ANYTHING on to the GOSPEL message! So we also need to be careful in how we judge others and make sure we aren’t adding legalism to the Gospel message. Some people might have stronger convictions on what is imagination, theatrical, or entertainment. And, it’s very important that we are seeking God’s Word for our convictions, and also on how we love on others with truth and grace.

6. We are saved by Grace through faith not by works!

But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. Romans 4:5

Christianity is a matter of the heart not just a list of don’ts.

And, praise God for His TRUTH

…Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith. (Romans 4:13)

.. And when God counted him as righteous, it wasn’t just for Abraham’s benefit. It was recorded for our benefit, too, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in him, the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God. (Romans 4:23-25)

October Week 1 & 2- The Year I Turned to Jesus. Romans Chapter 3. No one is GOOD, but in JESUS we have the HAPPIEST HOPE! 😍

Dear precious friends,

Before we get into our Roman’s study we would love to encourage you with this TRUTH from God’s Word:

‘Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7

In the One Year Bible on October 3rd, Philippians 4:4-7, encouraged us that we are called to REJOICE in The Lord ALWAYS!🌞 In the NLT it says that we are to ALWAYS BE FULL of JOY IN THE LORD! God is calling us to be full of joy in the Lord no matter what is going on in our life or in the world.

Are there things in your life that are causing you anxiety, worry, or sadness? Bring them to God in prayer!

If I am being honest I am definitely not ALWAYS full of joy. At times, I CAN allow the worries of the world, struggles, and stresses in my own life squash my joy and definitely my gentleness. Being less than joyful is pretty normal right? It really has to be a supernatural-God thing to ALWAYS be full of joy even through sad and hard times.

Well, then how do we do it? How are we ALWAYS joyful?

James 1:2-4: Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

  1. For myself, I recognize that I need to repent. Repenting is saying sorry to God for not doing the things He has called us to do, or doing the things He tells us not to do. God is actually telling me (telling us ) to not worry, to be joyful, to be gentle, to pray in all situations. So, when I’m not (when we aren’t) doing those things we are actually not doing what God is calling us to do. Proverbs 3:5-6 says: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make straight your paths.
  2. We should seek Jesus in walking in ALL the things God is telling us to do, and to not do! So let me explain this. It seems like it’s easy to focus on the things God tells us not to do, but ignore the things He tells us to do.
    • For example: don’t murder, lie, steal, cheat, lust etc. We got it ✅, DON’T DO THOSE THINGS!! BUT, we are actually ignoring God telling us to focus on: whatever is true, lovely, right, admirable think of such things (Phil 4:8), be gentle, forgive, don’t easily anger, have patience, be kind, be united in Christ.
      • Then actually asking God to help us give up those things or habits that aren’t what God is calling us to do. Like do we keep watching The Summer I Turned Pretty, or do we find something else to watch that is more glorifying to God? This stuff is HARD you guys, but this is how we grow as disciples of Christ Jesus. Giving up our old ways for His ways. (**reminder this isn’t about legalism or judging others this is about walking in ways that God is calling us to walk in.)
  3. We can ALL be encouraged that as daughters of Christ Jesus we can and should walk in HIS JOY through all things! This is not easy, but through the love of Christ Jesus we can find a true joy & peace that only can come from knowing Him!
  4. Be thankful! God in His infinite wisdom & love tells us that we do not have to be anxious or worried. He wants us to have JOY in Him! And, with thankfulness of all the amazing things God has given us, despite the brokenness of this world or our earthly situation, we can be comforted that we are secure in Him. God so LOVINGLY tells us that He is near! We don’t have to do this life alone!! In Psalm 34:18, God tells us: The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. What a kind and loving God that wants to bring us joy and comfort us in our brokenness. God saves the crushed in spirit!
    • ‘Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. ‘ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

So dear friends, I want to encourage you today that whatever you are facing bring it to Jesus! Pray to Him and ask God for His help, and the peace of God that goes beyond our understanding will protect our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. God is near! ❤️

So, let’s pray, and ABIDE TOGETHER in God’s Word!

Father God, thank You for all that You have given us! We thank You Lord for Your love and Your truth that is found in Your Word. Help us Lord to understand what you are speaking to us through Your Word, and help us apply Your truth to our lives today! We love You God. Amen. (a prayer from Psalm 119:18 & 34)

We would also love to encourage you moving forward to seek God in helping create a special quiet time routine for yourself with the Lord. So, just like in all things we should ask for God’s help! We can pray to the Lord and ask Him to give us the desire and discipline to make a daily habit and routine to seek Him!

  1. PLAN TIME WITH GOD – MAKE IT FUN AND SPECIAL! 💕

Our quiet time with God TRULY is the most wonderful time with the person who knows us most and loves us best of all!! So, dear friends, we want to encourage you not only to make it special, but also to make it a priority! With permission from your parents, of course. Light a candle and make yourself a special drink. Grab your Bible, journal, or study materials. Find a special spot in your home where you can feel God’s comfort, love, and undivided attention! We have to plan time in our day when we will seek Him, or it simply won’t get done!

A disciple is willing to abandon everything. Following Jesus mean letting go of:

Comfort, Control, Plans, Sometimes OUR Dreams. Our old life. (The Garden High School Ministry)

You can’t walk in the new life Jesus offers while clinging to the old.

Our Discipleship Question for October is: What are you holding on to that is preventing you from growing in your relationship with Jesus? And what are you willing to give up to follow Christ?

These are great questions for us to ponder as we are seeking the Lord, especially when finding or should we say “making” time to follow Him.

B is for BIBLE

This past week, we began reading chapter 3, Romans 3:1-20. Now in week 2, we are wrapping up the remaining verses in the chapter, Romans 3: 21-31. You guys this is MEATY stuff! What I mean is that Romans isn’t the easiest book of the Bible to quickly understand, so don’t be discouraged! Stick with it, and God will definitely speak to you! God, through the apostle Paul, is sharing so many amazing truths. At first glance, it might seem difficult to understand, even for me. But, I want to encourage everyone that we can take one verse, or even one word at a time! We don’t have to feel like we have to understand everything to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us. So read the entire passage, and then just focus on the one or two things that stick out to you.

‘Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law. After all, is God the God of the Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of the Gentiles? Of course he is. There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. Well then, if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfill the law.’ Romans 3:27-31

Lord please help us to Investigate what You are teaching us in Your Word! Amen

INVESTIGATE: What is God teaching us about Himself, His people, and ourselves? Other passages that come to mind & point to our need for our Savior Jesus Christ?

Let’s start at the beginning of Chapter 3

YOU GUYS THIS IS SO AMAZING!! Why is this so important? The Jews were entrusted with the very WORDS of God!! This is really important for us to understand. The scriptures revealed God’s plan of redemption by faith through Jesus from the very beginning! We should recognize what a special privilege this was for the Jews then. But now also, as Christians this is such a privilege for us too! When we read the words of God, He will reveal Himself to us! THE WORD of God is how we know Him, and how we can fight our battles! We cannot let the enemy tell us that the Old Testament doesn’t matter. Even Jesus rebuked the Sadducees for making this mistake! (see Mark 12:24 below)

Here are 11 verses that share the importance of the Word of God:

  1. (Jesus said) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17
  2. Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? Mark 12:24
  3. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” Galatians 3:8
  4. and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:15
  5. And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6 (talking about Abraham)
  6. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Romans 4:3
  7. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 (ESV)
  8. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 (ESV)
  9. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)
  10. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
  11. …and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, Ephesians 6:17 (ESV)

What an incredible blessing the Jews had the word of God, the Laws, and the prophets. What an incredible blessing that we now have Jesus Christ who has revealed Himself to be the Word of God! (John 1:1 (ESV))

Dear friends let not take this incredible blessing for granted! We have the Word of God.

✨✨✨✨ This is our reminder why we are called to abide! This is why we are encouraging you to make time with Jesus, so that you will know His word!

‘If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.’ John 15:7-11.

-These words are from Jesus himself, and I love how this ties into the verse from the beginning of our lesson. In Christ, when we abide in Him, our JOY may be full!

Because of time, we are going to fly through the rest of Chapter 3. I know this is crazy since Chapter 3 contains some of the most important verses in Christian Theology. However, in prayer to Jesus for this teen study, we ask God to reveal Himself to us in a way that is true, but we also want to ensure we stay on track with the time we have for this lesson. 😍

Romans 3:3-4, points out that if someone were unfaithful, does it mean that God is also unfaithful. And Paul says, “Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true.” God is faithful and good no matter what! In the book, Romans Dead to Sin and Alive to Christ, author Tara-Leigh Cobble asks the question: Does it comfort you to know God is faithful even when you have failed? For the believer in Christ Jesus, this is so comforting, and reminds me of this verse:

ONCE WE ARE IN CHRIST JESUS – WE ARE SECURE, even our FAILURES CANNOT SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD!

Verse 9-20 Goes into saying, As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous— not even one.” ALL PEOPLE, Jew, Gentile, ALL are under the power of sin. Then verses 11-18 use quotes from the Psalms and Isaiah. They highlight the sin starts in our heart and extends to all parts of our body! This diagram shows that what we see 👀, say 👄, and do 🏃🏽‍♀️ without Jesus Christ is evil for all of us! As the scripture says: No one is good not even one! (Romans 3:10) And, Paul inspired by God uses the Old Testament, Psalms & Isaiah, to prove how sinful man is!

Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! Psalms 14:1

Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues. Psalms 10:7

‘For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. ‘ Romans 3:20

BUT JESUS CHRIST!!

Week 1 of Chapter 3 left us feeling sad. If we tie all of this together, we see we are ALL sinful. The law—our rules, EVEN THE BIBLE in it self—cannot fix us, no matter how hard we try to be good and nice! Our hearts are evil and we are separated from a Holy God!

BUT WAIT?!?!?!? Didn’t I just tell you guys it’s SUPER important to make time to get in GOD’s Word?!?!? YES I DID!! BUT, REMEMBER HAVING A QUIET TIME doesn’t save us or make us good. We have a quiet time so we can hear from God, but we are saved by faith in Jesus and what He did for us on the cross.

Week 2!

‘for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ‘Romans 3:23

(Reminder this is our first step in the Romans road to Salvation. Go back to the beginning of our study to check this out, and we will talk more about this again later.)

If you have ever been to a Christian camp there is usually one sad and tearful night where everyone is faced with the realization that NO ONE CAN have a relationship with a HOLY GOD in their own strength. EVERYONE IS SINFUL AND, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO IN THEIR OWN STRENGTH TO SAVE THEMSELVES FROM THIS SAD condition.

But then, praise God, at camp the morning finally comes, and typically that next day is the very BEST DAY, because hope is shared! Jesus Christ is our HOPE!!

So let’s keep reading to understand! Going back a few verses to verse 21:

YAY AND AMEN!!! Hallelujah!! Our hope is our faith in Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the cross for us He paid the price for our sin, and we are made right when we believe that Jesus shed His blood for our sin on the cross. And, no one can boast! This is not because of what we have done. It is all because of Jesus and what He did for us!

‘There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. ‘Romans 3:30

DWELL – apply it to our lives!

Okay, how can we apply all of these amazing TRUTHS from God’s Word to our lives?

  1. IT’S SPIRITUAL – it’s a Jesus thing not an us thing! It’s a miracle that happens in our heart when we place our faith in Christ!
  2. IT’S BY GRACE.
  3. PRAISE GOD that WE HAVE HIS WORD!

Praise God for Jesus, for His Word, and for the Holy Spirit that lives in each one of us when we come to faith in Him!

So, one morning last week, as I was praying about how to share all of these important TRUTHS with you, God gave me this wonderful passage of scripture to share with you:

‘When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. ‘ Colossians 2:11-15

When we come to Jesus Christ through faith in Him, a spiritual procedure happens in our heart, and our lives!!! We are not the same!!! When we give our life to Jesus Christ, we are born again, a new creation!!! Our sins are cut away!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 1 Peter 1:3

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:15

When we gave our life to Christ, the Holy Spirit did a supernatural work. It happened by God’s grace! God says through Christ’s sacrifice He actually cut the sinful nature away from us. When God looks at us, He doesn’t see our sin anymore. He NOW sees Jesus Christ!!! So although yes we still sin, our ultimate desire is now for Jesus and for His goodness! This is why we should have a desire to spend time with Him! This is why Paul introduces himself as a servant of Christ Jesus.

A servant of Christ was Paul’s new identity, and that is now our new identity in Christ Jesus too!

And lastly, always remembering it’s by God’s grace!

‘For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,’ Ephesians 2:8

Dear friends our relationship with JESUS CHRIST is a GIFT!!!

Praise God! For the believer in Christ Jesus, Jesus is truly the best gift we have ever been given in this life and for eternity!

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (ESV)

Spend time in PRAYER. Praise God, confess sin, give thanks, present your requests!

Lord Jesus, thank you for Your glorious wisdom, love , and forgiveness You have for us! Forgive me for the many ways I miss the mark of Your Holy ways! Help me and all those who confess You as Lord and Savior to seek You and Your word. Help us to throw off our old selves and the dark ways of this world. Guide us to walk in Your ways of light, love, and truth! Amen

The Year I Turned To Jesus, Abiding Together Through the Book of Romans. Week 3 & 4: God’s Righteous Judgement & the Law. Romans 2:1-29

I’m so thankful to God that He knows EXACTLY what we need when we need it! His Word is always good, timely & true! I praise Jesus for bringing us the TRUTH in His Word today!

Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Matthew 7:3

A is for Ask in Prayer.

ASK: Begin seeking God by praying that He would open your eyes, heart & mind to understand Him & desire His Word. 

Dear Lord, open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law. Please give me Your understanding, so that I may keep your law & obey it with all my heart. (A prayer from Psalm 118 & 34.)

B is for Bible.

BIBLE: Open your Bible & read today’s passage (Romans chapter 2). Select a verse that sticks out to you and write it down. **Reminder we want to hide God’s Word in our heart! Psalm 119:11 tells us: I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You. This is a wonderful tool that will help us memorize God’s Word and hide it within our heart.

This week, we are combining our September reading from week 3 (Romans 2:1-16) & 4 (Romans 2:17-29) as we finish chapter 2. Two chapters down and 14 more to go, we got this!! 💪🏻❤️📖 **And, if you are just starting now, no stress, JUST JUMP RIGHT IN because there will be time for you to catch up later!!

Our “B” Verses for week 3 & 4 are: Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. …“Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?… But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2‬:1, 4, 6‬

But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God. Romans 2:29

Lord, we thank you again for your timely Word. The world sees and judges the outside, but YOU LORD always see and care about the inside. Thank You Jesus that You always care about our heart!” Amen

Investigate: What does this verse teach us about: 1. God 2. The people 3. Point to Jesus 4. Other scripture that comes to mind?

INVESTIGATE: This is where God’s Word gets fun. We get to read it, and then allow the Holy Spirit to teach us! Last week we got to look at a long list of sins that live in the heart of every person apart from the righteousness we receive by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

THIS IS SIN:

They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Romans 1:29-31

So now, when we look at today’s passage let’s keep in mind this list of sins above from Romans 1.

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. Romans 2:1

UGHH– WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SIN, & IT’S NOT JUST THEM, IT’S US TOO!

It’s really easy to read those verses about sin, and immediately start thinking about someone else. But, I really want to encourage us to first read these verses as if the Lord is speaking directly to us. Just like our title verse said: Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Matthew 7:3. We can quickly point the finger at someone else’s sin, without realizing we are completely missing the mark often in other areas of our life too!

We might not have gone as far as murder, but we are definitely ALL GUILTY of something. From lying (even white lies are lies), to gossip, arrogance, boasting, jealousy, the list can go on. And, Jesus calls us to a higher standard.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’’ ‘But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” Matthew 5:21-22

As believers in Christ Jesus, God is saying that even anger towards another brother, or name-calling puts us in jeopardy of God’s judgement.

And, now look how this thought amazingly connects with the rest of our “B” verses:

God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?… But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2‬: 4b, 6‬

GOD’S KINDNESS IS MEANT TO LEAD US TO REPENTANCE!

When we recognize God’s CRAZY kindness in our own life, that even though we have SO MUCH ugliness in our hearts, Jesus died for us so that we could be made new! We are ALL deserving of punishment for our sins, but Jesus paid the price for us, so that we can have an ETERNAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD on earth now, and in heaven FOREVER!

THIS IS WHY THE BELIEVER WEEPS. We aren’t worthy, but God!

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:11-12

As believers in Jesus, we have to fight against ourself, our flesh, and pray against stubbornness in our heart. We have to pray against arrogance, and pride. We need to say: You know what, I AM SORRY! Please forgive me. We need to pray to God & ask Him to help us have a DESIRE to repent, because we know we are guilty too, and we are SO THANKFUL for God’s grace. And, we want others to experience His love and grace in their lives as well!

This reminder of humility has truly been a timely reminder for me this week, as I’ve caught myself in shock of the wave of unkind and depraved comments people have been posting on social media, in messages, and on the news. And, somehow it seems like it stings more when it comes from people we know & often from those who profess they love God too.

It’s like I want to say: “HEY, you Christian! Haven’t you read Romans 1? Your WORDS are FULL of wickedness!!! And yes, maybe my statement is true, their words are full of wickedness, but if I’m saying that without looking at the plank in my own eye first, I will only be fueling the fire, & putting judgement back on myself.

Their nasty comments do nothing good for the Kingdom of God, but if I am responding in anger, hurt, or bitterness my comments will do nothing good for the Kingdom of God either.

So what can I do? What can we all do?

  1. We can repent for our own sin! Like our passage tells us, judging does nothing, since WE ARE SINNERS TOO! But, repentance gives us the humility to realize, we aren’t perfect, but we can point them to the one who is. Jesus! It’s only by God’s grace that He has and IS revealing sin to us. The Holy Spirit is helping us to walk & look more like Jesus as we die to ourself. THIS thought BTW, IS 100% the #1 point from our discipleship question this month. (Go back to the beginning of our study to read more.) 1. Do you want Jesus to conform to you, or Do you want to be like Jesus? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40 ) The answer should be obvious, we want to look like Jesus, not like our sinful self.
  2. In that SIN list from Romans 1, God calls arrogance and boasting a sin too. So, the second we think we are BETTER than someone else, this is the reminder that THOSE thoughts are sinful, and that should rightfully bring us right back down to where we belong. We are guilty too! (Although in Christ Jesus we are a new creation! We are made Holy by His grace.)
  3. We need to show love & PRAY! Jesus says to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matthew 5:44. Jesus said: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.Luke 19:10 Yes, we need to continue to pray for the other person/people to come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, and for the Holy Spirit to convict them of sin; but also, we need to continue to pray for ourselves! Pray that Jesus would soften our own heart, heal it, & reveal our own sin too!
  4. WHAT I AM NOT SAYING. So I’m not saying that we should never call out sin. And, I’m definitely not saying that we should ever condone it. Sin is clear. It’s listed in the Bible. Not just in Romans, but in the RED letters of Jesus. From Genesis all the way to Revelation, the entire Bible is one Truth, it’s ALL Jesus, and it is His living and breathing Word (Hebrews 4:12 ). However, I am saying that we need to be rooted in humility, and recognize that WE HAVE SIN TOO. WE ARE ONLY SAVED BY GOD’S GRACE, AND HE WANTS THE LOST TO BE SAVED TOO! Our battles are not against flesh and blood, they are against spiritual forces in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12) So, we need to seek Jesus in how stand up for His Truth, and how in kindness and courage we are to be a light to those who are lost.
  5. SEEK GOD’S WORD, SEEK GODLY COUNSEL, USE DISCERNMENT. There is a difference between judging and discernment. God has shown us what is evil through His Word and written it on our hearts. We are to flee from sin, & continue to pursue Jesus, and surround ourselves with others who will help us live more like Him. “Let those who are wise understand these things. Let those with discernment listen carefully. The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths sinners stumble and fall”. Hosea 14:6
    • Other verses that come to mind:
      • Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”  She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” John 8:10b-11
      •  “If your brother sins against you,  go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.  But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.  If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.  Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed  in heaven. Matthew 18:15-18

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. Ephesians 4:15

D is for Dwell. Apply it to your life

DWELL: This is where we apply what we have investigated in scripture to our life! We can’t even apply His Truth without His help! So, let’s pray!

Oh Jesus, please reveal Yourself to the lost, and those who are hurting apart from You. Open their eyes to their evil behavior, and hurtful words. Please give them a heart of compassion, and convict them by Your Word & Holy Spirit. I pray they would know You as Lord and Savior. And, Lord please forgive me for my heart of judgement towards them. Yet, please continue to give me Your discernment & wisdom. I pray my words would be Your words, gentle but true! Help me bring glory to You in all my words & actions in every situation. And Lord, forgive me for all the ways that I have missed the mark too. Thank you for Your kindness in my life that leads me to repentance. Amen

God is SO KIND and His kindness and patience towards us is meant to lead us & others to repentance. We need to pray against a stubborn and unrepentant heart for ourselves and for others!

There will be a day of God’s wrath.

But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil…This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. Romans 2: 8b, 9, 16.

Judgment day. So, this is where it gets REAL. I love TALKING ABOUT ALL THE WONDERFUL POSITIVE things about JESUS. Having cute Christian “drip” 😅, cute stickers, cute clothes, fun songs, think Forrest Frank! And yes, absolutely as Christians we should be joyful and positive, because the reality of NO MATTER what is happening in the WORLD or in our life, as a born-again believers in Christ Jesus, IT IS WELL WITH OUR SOUL, and we should tell ourselves this truth over and over again (John 3:3, Romans 8:28) However, on the flip side of this reality, there is a WHY it is well with our soul, and that is because Jesus has us, and we know where we are going, Heaven! Yet, for those who are self-seeking, who reject God’s truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will in fact be a judgment day for all of us, and knowing all of our sins and secret sins will be judged, how much more thankful are we to Jesus Christ for what He did for us on the cross? Every sin that we have ever committed is being stored up against us. And, one day when every knee will bow (Phil. 2:10, Isaiah 45:23, Romans 14:11) on that great judgment day (Matthew 12:36) when God’s book will be opened (Daniel 7:10, Revelation 20:12-13), and Jesus Christ’s righteousness will be revealed. Our sins will either be covered in Jesus’s blood, so when He sees our sin He will pass over us like the Lord passed over the homes in the Exodus; or, our every sin will be stacked up against us, and against a Holy God. On judgment day, we will either receive God’s grace and see our name written in His Book, or we will experience God’s wrath against us and our sins!

Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15

BUT, Jesus Christ is our HOPE!!!

“Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.”  Revelation 21:1-7

‘But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

When all hope seems lost, we are reminded that our hope is in Jesus Christ. He took our sins away, so through faith in Him we can have hope for ourselves, and for those that are lost!

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil…. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:10,21

Let’s praise God for what He has done through Christ. And pray for all that are lost that they too would know and love Jesus our Savior too!

Engage in Prayer with praise, thanksgiving, confession & supplication.

ENGAGE IN PRAYER:

Lord, Jesus we thank you for the glorious TRUTHS You have declare in Your Word. We praise You that You have created everything, and You are sovereign over ALL THINGS! Thank you for loving us so much that even though we mess up, through Jesus, we can repent of our sin and come to You. Help us to be more like You, & continue to share Your Good News with the World. Amen

THE YEAR I TURNED TO JESUS, Abiding Together Through the Book of Romans. Week 2: God’s Wrath Against Humanity: 1:18-32

When faced with evil we need to run to the TRUTH.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

Oh dear friends, this week has been a heavy one. My soul has been wrestling with so much in the wake of the evil that we have witnessed in our world. It’s no coincidence that the Lord has brought us to a passage in Romans that talks about what happens when people suppress the TRUTH about God and exchange it for a lie.

As we dive into this week’s study, we can rest assured that in Jesus Christ we will find our hope & our truth.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 

A is for ask in Prayer

As our soul aches with grief, confusion, or even anger at all the sad things happening in the world, we desperately need to cry out to God in prayer!

We ask God that He would open our eyes, heart & mind to understand & desire His Word. (Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions. Psalm 119:18 )

“Lord Jesus, help me to abide in You as You abide in me. As the branch cannot bear fruit from itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can I bear fruit apart from You. And God, please comfort us in our afflictions so we can comfort others with the comfort and peace we have received from you.” A prayer from John 15:4  & 2 Corinthians 1:4 

B is for Bible

Romans 1:18: “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 

19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 

20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools….

Investigate. What does this verse teach you about: God? The People? Yourself? Point to Jesus? Other Verses that come to mind?

We know evil is lurking, but when we see it face-to-face, it can be tremendously hard to shake off, especially when we witness it happening to people we care for and acted out by those we know.

When evil occurs, you might wonder, “HOW CAN SOMEONE DO OR SAY SUCH A THING?” I have asked this question before too, but I’m reminded to understand evil fully, we have to start from the very beginning.

Creation

The beginning of time, matter, and space has been laid out masterfully for us in God’s amazing Word, the Bible, starting in Genesis 1.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

God’s creation of His beautiful, spacious skies, water, land, animals, & man unfolds over 6 days in Genesis, as God created humankind’s first week ever and completed it with rest on the 7th day. This very real first week of creation has now been repeated thousands of times for approximately 6,000 years! Yet, even this simple Truth told in God’s Word about the creation of the world has been exchanged for a lie, & has caused many to doubt much of God’s Word.

We don’t have to look far in scripture to recognize the enemy’s tactic: Get people to DOUBT GOD’S WORD. GET PEOPLE TO DOUBT GOD’S GOODNESS.

The first people ever created by God were Adam & Eve, and they lived with God in a beautiful garden. And sadly, much like our world today, the garden was quickly filled with the enemy’s schemes & evil temptations, which led our first parents, Adam & Eve, in the sin of their own pride & reasoning to doubt God’s Word & His goodness. “Did God really say?” (Genesis 3).

This costly 1st sin brought forth a curse of death across all creation. And, this curse, unlike one played out in a fairytale, is the REALITY of how the first sin ever, which led to the first death ever, & birthed the EVIL which has infected every human heart since!

And, within just a few short chapters of the Bible, Genesis 6:5 says: The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

So this brings us all the way to the wickedness we see today.

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools….

29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy…

 32b …they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

That last verse definitely gets me. “THEY NOT ONLY CONTINUE TO DO THESE VERY THINGS, BUT ALSO APPROVE OF THOSE WHO PRACTICE THEM.”

The wise become FOOLs when they ignore God. Having an ungrateful & proud heart can lead to every kind of sin: greed, hate, envy, murder, pride, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, & gossip! 

The New Living Translation says that since they thought it was foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done, and they became: backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy…. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too!” Romans 1:28-30

Oh, how sad is the EVIL & DARKNESS of this World? The lost see evil and instead of calling it out, or mourning it. They celebrate it, and encourage others to do it!

Evil name-calls, Evil tells lies, & Evil kills.

I am absolutely grieved & devastated at the evil in the world, yet I am reminded that this list of ugly sins once lived within our heart as well! And, it is only by God’s goodness, mercy & grace that He has removed the scales from our eyes & has revealed to us not only the evil in the world; but also, the evil in our own heart.

We are ALL sinners in the need of a Savior! And, the only solution to the stop the wickedness in our heart & the wickedness of the world is Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

The wage of Adam & Eve’s sin brought death to all of creation, and birthed the sin that lives within our own heart. Yet, by placing our faith in Him, we are declared righteous! And, Jesus defeated death & the enemy when he rose again after being murdered on the cross.

“but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” 2 Timothy 1:10

Dwell: How can I apply the Truth of God’s Word to my life?

So how can we apply this TRUTH to our lives?

PRAY TO GOD, SEEK HIS WORD, & SURROUND YOURSELVES WITH OTHERS WHO DO THE SAME.

A dear friend sent this verse out yesterday, & it encouraged me so much. I pray God’s Word will encourage you too!

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

Of course the enemy wants us to become so overwhelmed with evil that we forget about the TRANSFORMING POWER of the Gospel! We do not have to be overcome by evil, but by the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives we can live out the Gospel with love, kindness, gentleness, and compassion!

And, we can pray for others to hear & understand the Gospel too!

Jesus Christ saved us, so He can & will certainly save others too! In fact, God’s Word tells us: “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.2 Peter 3:9 

God wants the lost to find Him! And, He can use us to share & show His love.

Last week we learned in Acts that Paul had an amazing transformation. Paul went from persecuting Jesus and approving murder to being saved and devoting his life to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. By God’s amazing grace, the evil & wickedness in Paul’s heart was transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus says: “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” Matthew 5:44

So we can pray against evil, & expectantly hope for others to be saved as well!

When we see EVIL, which is the opposite of God, we have to run to God, flee from temptation, & cling to HIS Word like a hidden treasure. Instead of giving into defeat & doubt we need to lean into Christ Jesus for HIS STRENGTH, HIS GOODNESS, HIS JOY, HIS LOVE & HIS TRUTH!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-7

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalms 34:8

So how do we find God’s truth?

God’s truth is found in His Word. So what does God’s Word say?

God’s Word says TRUTH IS:

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. John 17:1

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 1 John 2:21

God’s Word says LOVE IS:

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;  it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8

This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:10

God’s Word says acts of the flesh are:

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh… The acts of the flesh are obvious: .(see Bible).. immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, .(see Bible).., and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God..

God’s Word says the fruits of the spirit are:

..But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-25

So we need to ask ourselves does the truth we believe about God, the world, & ourselves come from God’s Word or somewhere else? Does our ideas about love come from television, culture, or God? Which act of the flesh do we need to repent of? Which fruit of the Spirit do we need to actively seek God for?

Acts of the flesh are from our sin nature. It’s easy to fly off the handle when someone treats you with disrespect. But, fruit of the Spirit are from God. They are super-natural, and come from a heart seeking Jesus and a desire to give up our own desires to follow Him! To be kind when we are mistreated, to show self-control, & forgiveness when we are slandered. These acts are super-natural, and they are why we need to seek Jesus in everything!

God’s word is true and will always remain! So let’s be encouraged, as Jesus told us this:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5

Engage in Prayer

In light of all that we have seen, read, & walked through this week let’s bring it all back to God in prayer with praise, thanksgiving, confession, & supplication.

Lord Jesus, thank you for Your Word, and the hope & peace that is found in You! Forgive us for any pride, unkindness, & doubt we may have. Help us be encouraged by Your Word, and help us to share Your Truth with others! Help us to provide comfort to those who need Your transforming Gospel message today. We love You Lord. Amen

Abiding Together Through Romans Week #1 – Introductions.

Hey sweet friends! I pray this week is treating you well. If you are following along with our study, The Year I Turned to Jesus, you should be wrapping up reading week 1, Romans 1:1-17, & completing your first ABIDE sheet, & starting on week 2, Romans 1:18-32, but NO worries if you are a little bit behind, there’s definitely time to catch up! I actually timed myself listening to Romans 1:1-32 on the YouVersion app on my phone & it took me about 5 minutes to listen to the whole passage, so I know you got this too! 💪🏻😉😆 (reminder always ask your parents before getting an app etc.)

And, also– Don’t forget to start with our “A” from our ABIDE method, Ask in Prayer. If you are having a hard time setting aside the time to get into His Word, or even find yourself distracted when you sit down to do it, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! ME TOOOOO! The enemy doesn’t want us to spend time with God as all our mighty weapons come from Him and the sword of the Spirt which is His Word! (see 2 Corinthians 10:4 & Ephesians 6:17) So, we need to fight our battles with PRAYER, as Ephesians 6:18 tells us:

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

So let’s cry out to God with our prayer from Psalm 119: 18- 34. “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law. Give me understanding, so that I may keep Your law & obey it with all my heart… And, Lord, Jesus- please help me get into Your Word. Help me find the time to be alone with You, so I can hear You and what You have for my life. In Jesus name we pray, Amen”

Your prayer doesn’t need to be these words at all, but of course it’s so helpful to use the Bible as your guide, & then to find the words that the Lord puts on your heart. The point is to cry out to Him for help, because He loves you, and He wants you to call out to Him, and depend on Him for everything!

Haha mine are crazy & chaotic! 😍 I wish I was a little more organized, so you could follow all the amazing things the Holy Spirit was speaking to me as I read His Word; but, you will be absolutely amazed by how Jesus will speak to you through the pages of His Word too, as you earnestly seek Him.

What does your ABIDE look like?

***ABIDE STUDY TIP: I recommend finding a good study Bible; with notes and cross references. These tools can help you make scripture connections throughout the Bible & find meaning to passages that are hard to understand. However, I want to caution you from blindly believing every study note that is in the Bible. While the actual Bible is the authoritative & inspired Word of God, study notes can be opinion. So truly seek the Holy Spirit, & use scripture against scripture to understand God’s meaning, but study notes can certainly be helpful! Currently, I’m enjoying MacCarthur’s study bible & The New King James Study Bible. I believe they would be great resources for you to use as well.

And, The NLT translation, is a great place to start, especially as a teen or if you are new to God’s Word, as it has been translated into our everyday vocabulary. I actually read the NLT everyday in the One Year Bible. However, I think some of the original meaning of God’s Word can be lost when translated this way, which is why I also recommend other translations like: ESV, LSB, NKJV & NIV. Using your phone app to checkout other translations can be very helpful! And, I love listening to the audio version while I’m reading along in my physical Bible. I hope these tips will be helpful for you too!

LSB MacArthur Study Bible 2nd Edition: Unleashing God’s Truth One Verse at a Time

Alright, let’s get back to Week 1, Romans 1:1-17 and our title:

Haha, it’s cringey I know. 😂😅 But, that’s what came to mind when reading Paul’s amazing introduction, inspired by God. This is how Paul introduces himself, and WOW I love it so much! Maybe if he was around today & had social media this would be in his bio? What do you think?😅

This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his Good News. God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be[a] the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.[b] He is Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, God has given us the privilege[c] and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name. And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ Romans 1:1-6

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: Romans 1:16a

So this is my “B” for our ABIDE method for Romans week 1 (read this old post here if you want to understand the ABIDE method better) Romans 1:1-6 & 1:16, and of course 1:16 happens to be our main verse for the year, so I couldn’t miss it!

What verses spoke to you? What verse did you write down for your “B”?

Paul’s introduction, through the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart, because he starts with a list of WHO he is in Christ Jesus.

  1. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,
  2. called to be an apostle and
  3. set apart for the gospel of God—  

How do people know you? Do you know who you are in Christ Jesus?

The FIRST thing Paul says after his name is that He is a servant of Christ Jesus. Wow what a convicting & encouraging title! A servant for Christ, is this the first way we would describe ourselves? Typically it’s our name, then maybe if you are married, how many kids or siblings you have, then a hobby or job, where you are from etc… But, Paul goes straight into who He is in Christ. In other versions of the Bible the word slave is used here. It’s from the Greek word Doulas, in the Hebrew sense, a servant that willingly commits himself to serve a master he loves and respects (MacArthur LSB). As we are growing as disciples of Christ, we should lean into Jesus to have a willing heart to be His servant, as our #1 identity.

Paul’s Story – “I” is for Investigate

15  “‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked. “And the Lord replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. 16 Now get to your feet! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and witness. Tell people that you have seen me, and tell them what I will show you in the future. 17 And I will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am sending you to the Gentiles 18 to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.’” Acts 26:15-18 NLT (You can read more about Paul’s amazing transformation in Acts 3, 9, 20-22, & 26.)

In Acts we get to see the amazing transformation of Paul’s life, by the GRACE of Jesus Christ. And, this AMAZING transformation happens in the lives of ALL who truly come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior! (see Romans Road at the end of this post here). When we like Paul understand our sin & depravity apart from God, & we realize the mercy & grace given to us, not by our own works, but by faith in who Jesus is and what He did for us on the cross, for the forgiveness of our sins. This TRUTH will absolutely ignite a fire for us to walk in a manner worth of our calling (Ephesians 4:1-2).

Remember our 2 Corinthians 5:17 truth: In Christ Jesus you are a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come. And you too are now SET APART for the Gospel of God!

So not only are we called to live and walk in our new identity, as a child of God (1 John 3:1), apart from who we used to be, in our fleshly desires ( 1 Peter 2:11). God now has a calling on our life. He has given each of us gifts & talents to accomplish His amazing purposes for us to share His life-saving Good News & to do the good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

What gifts and talents has God given you to be used for His glory?

There’s an amazing sermon here from University Fellowship Church that does a great job of explaining our new status in Christ & encouraging us to walk in our calling, if you have some time, I definitely recommend!

Okay, stay with me as we dive into the latter section of my “B” verses Romans 1:2-6, & 16

Paul, explains that the Good News was told beforehand through the prophets (that you can read about in the Bible!), and who exactly is His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord:

God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name. Romans 1:2-5 NLT

Scripture fulfilled, Jesus died, buried, and appears again!!

“D” is for Dwell – apply this truth to your life.

THIS PART IS SO EXCITING to me, as I love the Historical & REAL application of who Jesus is. The Bible is full of historical genealogies, which is a list of names explaining what family line someone has come from, & in the above pictures, we see the genealogy from Adam, through the line of King David, to His earthly father Joseph to Jesus. And, in Matthew, Mary, Jesus’s mother was also shown to be through the line of David, as foretold by the prophets. And secondly, this verse points out His DIVINE nature. There is only one man in history, and that man is Jesus Christ that was 100% man, yet 100% Divine (Matthew 1:18), and as Romans 1:4 tells us: He was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. 

We believe in a living God, and We have a God who understands our challenges, because He also endured them, but unlike us, was without sin! Yet, He died for our sin so we could be made Holy.

Through Christ, WE HAVE RECEIVED HIS GRACE, and now we also have the privilege & authority to tell the world what God has done for us, & by His grace through faith, what Jesus Christ will do for them too!

 Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name. And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ. Romans 1:5-6 NLT

And finally:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: Romans 1:16a

How amazing that our Week 1 ABIDE, would wrap up with this glorious verse. I pray that like Paul, we would NEVER be ashamed of the Gospel. Because the TRUTH of who Jesus Christ is, Historically & Divinely, & how we understand this amazing reality is our HOPE for eternity!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes!

Do you have this power? Are you tapping into it by abiding in Him? Are you ashamed of the Gospel?

Jesus asked Peter this in Matthew 15:15-16

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Who do you say Jesus is?

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

These passages in Romans, remind us of WHO we are in Christ, and WHO He is! I pray that they encourage you to be confident in the amazing calling Jesus Christ has on your life. I’m sure this week has met you with high’s & lows, but I pray in Jesus’ name that you rest in the peace of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

“E” is for Engage in Prayer

I pray this week is a blessing to you as we keep abiding together in His Word through Week 2, Romans 1:18-32.

Teen Discipleship: Abiding together in Christ through the book of Romans. The Year I Turned To Jesus.

Yay, praise God 2025-2026 Teen Discipleship is here!! This year we will continue the pursuit of becoming disciples of Jesus Christ and growing in fellowship with one another. 

This year we are enthusiastically asking our teens to devote daily time to prayer and to the reading of God’s Word. We will read through the book of Romans in our daily quiet time over the 2025-2026 school year, & break up into peer discussion groups to share all the amazing things God is teaching us from spending time with Him and studying His Word.

Our Goals:

  1. To have a daily abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.
  2. To grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ by seeking God and His Word. And also, encouraging one another to walk in a manner worthy of our calling in Christ Jesus.
  3. To grow in encouraging fellowship with one another.

Our Scripture Guides:

  • John 15:4-5 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
  • John 8:31-32 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
  • Ephesians 4:1-3, 22-24, 29, 32 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace… 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness… 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear… 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
  • Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

All you need for this study is your Bible, & a willingness to run after God with all your heart, soul & strength (Deuteronomy 6:5). But don’t fret. That’s why we need Jesus in the first place! Ask the Creator of the universe, the God of the Bible, Jesus, your Lord & Savior to help you do all things (Philippians 4:13). Ask Him to help you seek Him and His Word with His understanding (Psalm 119:34, Matthew 7:7), & He will come alongside you in this worthy goal of spending time with Him in prayer and the reading of His Word.

The theme for our year: The Year I Turned To Jesus. Abiding together through the book of Romans, Teen discipleship.

You may have noticed, The Year I Turned To Jesus, is a spoof on the show, The Summer I Turned Pretty. The thought behind the spoof is, wherever the summer took you, God wants to meet you where you are at RIGHT now, today! Maybe this summer was great, you went to camp, sought after God and grew deeply in your relationship with Jesus; or, maybe it was the opposite. You had a hard summer, relationship problems, made bad choices, had sickness, trauma; or, maybe it was a little mix of both! There were God high moments where you felt really on fire and close to God, but then life set in, bad habits came back, the world tempted you, time was wasted, and you focused on things of the world, rather than on the Holy things of God (like watching sketchy shows like TSITP 😅, see Philippians 4:8).

But we want to encourage you that wherever you are at, Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!

And, Romans 8:1 tells us: Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

So those in Christ Jesus, who have given their lives to Him, we don’t have to stay in the guilt and shame of the past. We can and should respond to the Lord’s calling on our life today. To grow in Him, to be transformed by Him, and to walk daily with Him!

As Paul shares in Philippians 3:13-14, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” So let’s forget what is behind us & press on toward the goal to win the prize which God has called us heavenward!

Because, our end goal is to be more than just a Christian by name, but by God’s grace to be born again, transformed by the living God, and truly become disciples of Jesus Christ.

How this study will work:

We will break up the 16 chapters of Romans over the course of 8 months (the school year). We will read 2 chapters every month. In the schedule on the following pages, I have split up the 2 chapters over 4 weeks. For each week there is an ABIDE sheet for you, a total of 4 per month.

Use this ABIDE format as a tool to help you as you seek God & His word, but you aren’t bound by this format. The goal of this study is to help you have an intimate daily relationship with Jesus Christ, in the midst of your busy teen life! So make this study your own! Break up the verses daily, or however it will be the best way for you to establish a daily habit in seeking God through prayer and reading His Word.

Remember the Creator of the universe loves you and wants to know you! Use this study to chase after God the way He is chasing after you.

Also, we will continue in our pursuit of understanding the Gospel & what is a disciple of Jesus Christ. We will explore the Romans Road to Salvation, & 6 questions of discipleship over our 8 months together. In addition, we will discuss these questions in our peer groups, and share what God is teaching us through our ABIDE sheets. And, we will gather together for fellowship & prayer.

We are so excited for what God has in store for us as we sincerely seek Him together this year! Thank you for your willing heart to join us on this adventure!

Pride goes before destruction! Week 1 in Review: June 1-8, The One Year Bible.

Family drama with loyalty, lies, and executions! A grieving mother, a wise woman, a troublemaker, a King & his sons, mighty warriors, an angel of death, tongues of fire, and Giants!

Wow! June 1-8 was such an amazing action-packed week with the Lord through The One Year Bible.

I hope you have been really enjoying your reading so far, but no worries if you have missed a few days. Feel free to jump in today! And, that’s what I love about The One Year Bible reading plan, you can jump in at any point, and you are never behind. Everyday is a new start, and if you continue you’ll get to it all! So, I encourage you to jump right in today! I’ll include the dates again at the end of this post.

Our first week was in The Old Testament in 2nd Samuel 13-24 and starting in Kings 1-4. We got to witness the final season of King David’s life. And, then in The New Testament, we began the next chapter of God’s amazing plan at the end of John 20-21 and in Acts 1-6 with the miraculous resurrection of Jesus Christ! We watched the disciples receive the power of the Holy Spirit, and many others become saved by the amazing Good News of the Gospel. Such a wonderful week!

We were continuing our study of Proverbs 16 with verses 14-27. And, I was truly amazed at the entire Proverb; as, it miraculously summarized so much of everything we were reading!

Proverbs 16: The Lord works out everything to its proper end- even the wicked for a day of disaster 4, The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished 5. Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for: through fear of the Lord evil is avoided 6.In their hearts humans plan their course but the LORD establishes their steps 9. Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness… 12 Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall 18… Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful 20… Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess it, but discipline is wasted on fools 22… Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body 24…. There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death 25…. Proverbs 16 (NIV &NLT) 

That last verse really hits, as the “path” we take often SEEMS so right, but choosing a path from our “OWN” reasoning without seeking God’s will through His word and in prayer, can certainly lead to death!

This seems unfair! Why would I have to wait even longer when I have already endured enough? I know what is right, and I think God would want me to do it this way even though it goes against His word. That’s not really what He means… This feels right, so how can it be wrong? It’s okay to be rude to people who are rude to me!

That last thought is the hardest one for me. When someone is mean or rude, I know I want justice! But, I also know God’s word:

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Romans 12:19

So, I can choose to obey the Lord, and follow His word, or I can choose to take my “OWN” path. It’s definitely an area for me to keep praying about and asking for the Lord’s help in. What about you? What is an area that you need the Lord’s help in?

Did you happen to notice as we walked through the many trials of the Old Testament: June 1-8, that much of the drama that occurred with King David, his sons, and his advisors happened because they were not ACTUALLY seeking God. They TALKED a lot about things that “sounded” godly: calling people lords, talking about kings, and Israel; but, they were not ACTUALLY seeking God himself! And, unfortunately this is what we can do sometimes too.

We talk about God, but we are not actually SEEKING GOD!

This was a great reminder that when “we” plan and “do” things in our OWN arrogant thoughts and reasoning apart from seeking the wisdom of the Lord through His word and prayer, “our” plans tend to be disastrous. Yes, “godly” people, and even entire churches find themselves in terrible situations when they step out in their OWN reasoning apart from seeking God and His word!

This thought is said well in Proverbs 11:2:

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” (Boom! Can I say mic drop here, or is that too cringey? Haha, I think my kids will cringe at me saying this. LOL!)

Do we recognize that acting out in our own thoughts is the sin of PRIDE? Pride is when we think that we know better than the Creator of the universe! Do we actually think that WE know better than God? You know who thinks he knows better than God? It’s the devil, and he will use absolutely every scheme to trick you into thinking you know better than God too! Pride is at the root of practically every sin, and it’s the opposite of trusting in the Lord. I pray that as we continue to review this week, and our readings this summer, that we will see the pride in our own hearts, and ask the Lord to help us remove our pride, and humble ourselves to trust in Him.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

We need You Lord to help us stay humble! Through the power of Your Holy Spirit, we truly need You to help us constantly seek You, and not lean in our own understanding!

As we begin our review, this is such a great reminder to make sure we are taking the time to seek the Lord in ALL things, and especially when coming to Him and reading His Word. (Don’t make this into a check list or summer book club. This is to help you know your Messiah, in a REAL relationship with the God of the Universe!)

A is for Ask in prayer.

Thank you Lord for ALL of YOUR wisdom. Help us to seek You and Your Word with Your understanding. Help us Lord take Your Word and hide it in our hearts so that we might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11) We love you Lord and we praise You for another week that we get to seek You. We love You Lord. Amen

I shared in the last post that Psalm 119 is one of my favorite chapters in the entire Bible. Psalm 119 happens to be the longest chapter in the Bible, and I love that it is filled with the most encouraging words that guide us in a heart that thirsts for God’s will and His word for our truth and understanding!

Psalm 119:160  “The very essence of your words is truth; all of your regulations will stand forever.”

Oh we praise You Lord for the Truth that You have written for us in Your Word. I am so thankful to You Lord that our Psalm study started here! And, I pray that this beautiful Psalm will impact those who read it in the same way.

Those who love your instructions have great peace, and do not stumble. I long for Your rescue, LORD, so I have obeyed your commands. I have obeyed your laws, for I love them very much. Yes, I obey your commandments and laws because you know everything I do. Psalm 119: 165-168

Okay, jumping into Day 2-8. We begin with Psalm 120-126, and we are getting ready to start one of the most incredible journeys that miraculously connects with our Old and New Testament readings. 

So, Buckle up, or better yet, strap on your sandals, because we are going to begin an AMAZING trek up to Jerusalem on Mt. Zion, singing Psalms the entire way!

Jerusalem during David and Solomon’s Kingdom. Have you read Pilgrim’s Progress? I was visualizing this book while reading this Psalm.

“Psalms 120-134 are called pilgrim psalms or songs of ascents. They were sung by those who journeyed to the temple for the annual festivals (3 times a year). Each Psalm represents a “step” along the journey in a distant land in hostile surroundings, Psalm 122 pictures the pilgrims arriving in Jerusalem, and the rest of the Psalms move toward the temple, mentioning the various characteristics of God.” – Life application Study Bible, NIV

First, I want to point out that I absolutely LOVE that this is such an amazing reminder, in case you have forgotten that we are reading about REAL people, in REAL places, and in REAL history!

I always love the reminder that we are not just reading stories. You may have noticed that I try to say “the people in the account” verses “the people in the story.” Well, I have to give my husband credit for this. He shared this language with me while teaching Sunday school together, and it’s been a blessed reminder that we are NOT just reading stories or fairy tales in the Bible! We are reading REAL ACCOUNTS, that occurred IN REAL HISTORY, of events that REALLY happened just a few thousand years ago. (Yep, not millions of years ago, and can’t wait to talk more about that as we get back into Genesis, if Lord-willing we are still moving through this plan. 🙂 ) But, when you start seeing history, the world, and the Bible through the lens of “this is all REAL;” then, the most amazing connections and the most amazing miracles in your heart begin to happen. The world suddenly begins to make sense. Giants, YES! Tongues of Fire, YES! Genealogies with names of REAL people, with years, times, and actual dates. YES! And, the way God has orchestrated it all is so amazing! And, do I believe all of it? Absolutely, YES! 

This might seem like such a foreign concept to you, but before you move me into the “she’s crazy camp,” please stay with me awhile. Because, I truly believe that it’s these little leaps of faith to lay down our OWN reasoning and actually place our trust in our unseen God, and what He says in His Word is TRUE that will move mountains in our of faith and trust in Him.

How much do we actually trust Him? And, do we actually believe His word? Do we actually believe that He REALLY created the heavens, the mountains, and formed us in our mother’s womb? Do we really believe That God took the Son of God into heaven right before the disciples eyes? DO WE REALLY believe it?

Praise God, by His amazing grace that I actually DO BELIEVE, it truly is a miracle! And, praise God the devout Jews trekking up to Jerusalem singing these very Psalms really believed it too! And, the disciples that we met in John 20-Acts 6, also really believed it!

In fact, right before our very eyes, we miraculously witness the power of the Holy Spirt change these insecure, confused, and scared disciples into the bold, brave, and courageous men, that give their lives to share the 100% TRUTH of God’s word and what they believed!

So, we can imagine these devout Jewish pilgrims, traveling from distant lands, singing these 15 Psalms as they journeyed up to Mount Zion, also know as Jerusalem (the city of peace) to celebrate their 3 annual festivals. Jerusalem is 2,500 feet above sea level, so these travelers would face a very long up hill climb to participate in these festivals for God.

The pilgrims were journeying through very hostile surroundings, yet praise God, they knew their help came from Him, the maker of heaven and earth. And, despite their sin and fickle ways, we can see when their hearts, minds, and feet were seeking the way to Him, and they were comforted by Him and His understanding

I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to him, and He answered my prayer. Rescue me, O Lord, from liars and from all deceitful people. O deceptive tongue, what will God do to you… I am tired of living among people who hate peace. I search for peace, but when I speak of peace they want war. – Psalm 120:1-3, 6-7 NLT (Day 2)

‘I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.’ (Day 3’s highlighted verse) Psalm 121:1-3 A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. – Psalms 121:7 (Day 3)

Thank you Lord that we can take our troubles to you! We can cry out to You and You WILL answer our prayers. You Lord WILL rescue us from deceitful people. We are safe with You Jesus, and we find truth in Your Word. At times it’s painful to live in this broken world that seems so wicked and far from You, but we know that in You there is peace. Lord Jesus, please keep us on Your path, filling ourselves with your Truths so we will not depart from You!

B is for Bible.

Okay, ready to BE AMAZED by God’s word and His miraculous timing? June 5th is the day that everything came together for me! I am so always so amazed by God’s orchestration of it all!

I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven. We keep looking to the Lord our God for his mercy, just as servants keep their eyes on their master, as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy, for we have had our fill of contempt.  We have had more than our fill of the scoffing of the proud and the contempt of the arrogant. -Psalm 123: 1-5 (A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.)

It finally clicked for me that the jewish pilgrims making their way to Jerusalem, were traveling there for an annual Jewish festival called PENTECOST,

Okay, pay attention, we are going to do some math. Pentecost means 50 in Greek, and it is celebrated the 50th day after the Passover. In Acts 1:4, our resurrected Jesus just spent 40 days with His disciples, and He tells the disciples to not leave Jerusalem until the gift His Father has promised has come, and they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit,. And then, 10 days later, making it 50 days after Passover, we are now at the annual feast that our jewish pilgrims are traveling to, called PENTECOST!

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.  When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” Acts 2:1-11

So, here we have our devout Jewish pilgrims traveling from all different lands that speak all different languages, singing these very Psalms that we have been reading, Psalm 120-134. So, we know that these jewish pilgrims KNOW the Word of God, and many of them have hearts seeking HIM. And, from reading His word, they know that Lord has promised someone from King David’s throne to reign forever and ever (Psalm 134:12). So, this Pentecost around AD 63, in chapter 2 of Acts, they are arriving in Jerusalem, with their eyes looking to the Lord for His mercy, tired of the ridicule of the arrogant and the contempt from the proud (Psalm 123:2-4), and they are met with the most amazing miracle. As they are arriving, they hear a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and they hear the disciples begin to speak in all the different languages. (Acts 2:3-4,5)

The Action Bible

The pilgrims are UTTERLY AMAZED when they hear their own native languages being spoken and declaring the wonders of God. (Acts 2:12)

And then, the disciple Peter, now empowered by the Holy Spirt, stands up and reminds them of what the Prophet Joel, King David, and Old testament prophecies said concerning the Messiah that were fulfilled in Jesus Christ (Isaiah 44:3). And finally, Peter lets them know that in God’s sovereign plan, they had actually KILLED the very Messiah they were looking for (Acts 2:5). They had nailed him to a cross! When the pilgrims heard this they were cut to the heart and they desperately wanted to know what could they do? (Acts 2:37)

Can you imagine, how desperate they felt? They just realized that the Lord that they were traveling to, searching for, and singing praises to, that they were actually responsible for his death! They themselves were perhaps the very arrogant and proud people they were singing about. The pilgrims were cut to the heart, and they desperately wanted to know what they could do.

Yet, the mercy they were looking for was here. Jesus Christ had planned this to be THE ONLY WAY to FORGIVE them of their terrible sins. And, Praise God, Peter knew the answer:

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit… for all who’s the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39)

And, praise the Lord, about 3,000 many who were our Psalm-singing, traveling-pilgrims, repented and believed! Praise God!! Our Jewish pilgrims were saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s gift of grace through faith, and they received the power of the Holy Spirit, as they were saved this very day!

Oh, praise You JESUS for this amazing miracle!!

I is for Investigate.

Our Old testament readings in 2 Samuel 19-1 Kings 4, tied together so perfectly with all of this as King David and King Solomon wrote some of these Psalms of ascent. (Psalm: 122, 124, 127, 131, 133). And they were written about them and for them! (Psalm 132)

And, wow were these chapters action-packed! Filled with warriors, lies, and even murder! We had more battles against giants, an angel of death, and thousands died of a plague caused by sin!

When investigating what the word is telling us about:

  1. God.
  2. The People in the account.
  3. Ourselves.
  4. How does this point us to Jesus Christ?
  5. Other verses that come to mind?

I was reminded of a few things:

  1. God really cares about people. There are so many unique people in the Bible and God knows their names, their jobs, their families, and He knows their heart! And, God takes the time to list each one of them.
  2. God has orchestrated His amazing plan of redemption from Genesis to Moses, Ruth to David, David to Jesus, and all the way to you and me! We are all part of His amazing & wonderful plan, that awaits our Jesus to come back the same way the disciples saw Him go up into the clouds.
  3. Yet, if at any moment if we let our pride sneak in, and forget that we are ALL desperate sinners, in desperate need of a Savior, then we are setting ourselves up for a mighty fall. And, also a reminder that our zeal must remain for God above all things! I was reminded by our Old Testament people, especially Joab, King Saul, King David, and the nation of Israel, when they cared more for their tribes, and their people over caring for God and His will, it was disastrous! Misplacing zeal for anything before God was completely tragic every time, and brought so much drama, including, murder, plagues and more death!
  4. The Lord wants us to remain humble, and recognize it is by His grace alone! When we repent and believe, we are forgiven, by His wounds we are healed. And then, we become brand-spanking new saints, a new creation in Christ Jesus! As, born-again, believers in Christ, our identity is not in ourselves, but as children of God, Jesus our King!
  5. Verses that come to mind:
  • How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver! The path of the virtuous leads away from evil; whoever follows that path is safe. Proverbs 16:16-17 (Day 2)
  • He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has passed away. Revelation 21:4
  • Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6
  • Then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name. Acts 4:10-11.
  • Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11

We praise You Lord for Your wisdom and just judgement. You are the ONLY path that will leads us to Your heavenly Kingdom, and we are so thankful for YOU!

D is for Dwell.

In what ways do we misplace our zeal and loyalty?

Who do we put first? Ourselves, our thoughts, our people, our own will; or, do we strive to put God first?

Like we mentioned above, we noticed that the people in these chapters were often talking about God, but they weren’t actually SEEKING God. It’s a great reminder that if what we THINK God is “telling” us doesn’t line up with what scripture says, and even goes against His word, then it IS NOT from God! Period. Our own emotions, and desire to do what “we” want and think is right, will tell us all sorts of things. (See Genesis 3, Eve was tricked by the serpent to doubt the words of God, and she stepped out in her “own” reasoning against what God said, and let’s just say it didn’t go well for her and mankind ever since! )

In 2 Samuel 24, King David wanted to take a census, because He wanted to! He was leaning into his own pride and the strength of his army, instead of seeking the Lord. When he acted out in what He thought was right, without seeking God, it was disastrous. 70,000 people died because of His sin.

How much brokenness do we cause when we “do what we want to do” apart from obeying God?

How can we apply this to our lives? Submit and obey.

  • Let our zeal be for God above all things.
  • Let us not wait until disaster strikes before we seek after God.
  • Let us stay humble, and not do things in our reasoning, but seek after God, His word, and His will.

In our readings on June 5th, King David’s conscience finally hit him (2 Samuel 24), and he realized that he had sinned greatly against the Lord. And praise God, when the Lord brought the opportunity to David to repent, and build an altar to the Lord for the forgiveness of his sins to stop the plagues, Araunah the Jebusite wanted to give him everything for free, but David knew that there was a cost for his sin:

“But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” 2 Samuel 24:24

And, King David was right! There is a cost for the forgiveness of our sins! Praise God, that in His great mercy, kindness, and love He sent His son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to pay the penalty for OUR SINS! We are the SAME as the traveling pilgrims! Our sins also nailed Jesus Christ to the cross, and His death is the COST. Jesus Christ is the sinless lamb that died, so we can receive the FREE gift of eternal life by placing our faith in him, by repenting of our sins and believing on Him as our Lord and Savior.

The Gibeonites in 2 Samuel 21:4, also knew that money could not settle the matter, and only blood could atone for the sins. Praise the Lord, that Jesus shed His blood for you and for me!

Are we willing to lay down our lives to follow and serve our King?

The cost for us could be giving up our pride in “our” thoughts and “our” way of life to follow our King Jesus. Not because it’s easy, and not because we are doing it by our own strength, but because of the power of the Holy Spirit that lives in the hearts of those who have truly repented and believe that Jesus is the only way! In our weakness, when things are hard, we turn to HIM. Where in the power of Jesus’ name the lame walk and our sins are forgiven.

We ALL killed the Author of life, but God had mercy on us by sending His Son Jesus to die. Jesus paid the price for our sin!

What’s the difference between King David, King Saul, Peter and Judas? They were all sinful, yet David and Peter repented of their sin and by God’s grace their hearts desired to seek after God. David and Peter did not die proud in their own sin.

Engage in Prayer.

Oh Lord Jesus, I pray that we would stay like pilgrims with our eyes lifted to You, asking for Your mercy. Lord Jesus I pray that we would remain humble, and repentant of our sins and not stubborn in our our arrogance and pride. Lord, we have had enough of the our own contempt, and I pray that we would seek to Honor You and follow Your word and Your will for our lives. We know that only You will bring refreshment in our lives (Acts 3:26), and only You will make our hearts new!

Oh, we praise you Lord that there is salvation in no one else like You! (Acts 4:12)

And we praise You Lord that in You, Your word, and by the power of Your Holy Spirit (Acts 4:13), we have all that we need,

YAY!! SUMMER BIBLE READING STARTS TODAY!!

Yay, Praise God, today is the day! We made it, June 1st is here! Our Summer Bible Reading Plan starts today! (For those of you still in school, or joining later feel free to hop in at any time! You are never behind. His mercies are new for us every morning!)

Okay, so here we go! Today in The One Year Bible, we are starting our reading in 2 Samuel 18:1-19:10, John 20:1-31, Psalm 119:153-176, Proverbs 16:14-15.

As we begin our time with the Lord, remember that we want to start in prayer! Reminding ourselves that this is not just a summer reading plan, but this is a time that we are going before The Creator of the universe, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And, we always want our time in the Word to be about God, and with God. So let’s begin by praying to Jesus that He would fill us with His Holy Spirit; and, that God would open our eyes, heart, and mind to understand and desire His Word.

We are going to follow the ABIDE method to help guide our daily quiet time with the Lord.

I love writing in a journal during my quiet time with the Lord. It’s another great tool that can help us keep track of our time spent with him, record our prayers, and can also help us hide His word in our hearts. So, I definitely recommend using one also.

Since, I love starting my quiet time praying through the Psalms, specifically Psalm 119, it’s totally a God thing that our reading plan is starting here! So, flip to Psalm 119:153-176, and begin by praying to the Lord.

A is for Ask in prayer:

Lord Jesus, we come to You this morning. We love you and pray that this morning and this entire summer will be fruitful as we seek You! Please bless this time and our hearts as we read Your Word. Help us discover You and Your will for our lives this summer. Help us to lay down our lives to truly be Your disciples. Thank you Lord for another day getting to seek You. Amen

Psalm 119:153-176. This is such a perfect Psalm to start our summer and cultivate our hearts in seeking The Lord through His Word.

“Lord, how great is your mercy; let me be revived by following your regulations.” Psalm 119:156

“Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble.” Psalm 119:163

And, the entire section from 169-176, is so amazing!

Wow so amazing, right? Have you ever felt like a lost sheep that has wandered away? (Verse 176) I know I have, but I am so thankful to the Lord that He sought after me and rescued me! The Lord is there to rescue you too! Praise the Lord that He is always there to give us a helping hand, and that His Word provides the instructions for our lives.

Lord, I pray that You would listen to our cries, and give us discerning minds! I pray that You would rescue us from our sins as You have promised. Let our tongues sing praises about Your Holy Word. Lord, let Your instruction be our delight. Thank you Lord that when we wander like lost sheep You come and find us. Help us to always seek You and not stray. Amen

B is for Bible. Open your Bible and read today’s passage. Select a verse that sticks out to you and write it down.

Yay! We are already done with the 1st section of our reading, Psalm 119:153-176. So we can now move on to today’s Proverb 16:14-15: “The anger of the king is a deadly threat; the wise will try to appease it. When the king smiles, there is life; his favor refreshes like a spring rain.”

Praise the Lord, that by His grace we are saved. When we give our life to Jesus as Lord by believing on Him alone to forgive our sins, we are saved! Our sins are washed clean when we repent to Him. And, our King smiles on us, because He sees Jesus as the forgiveness of our sins. We are saved from His wrath and brought into His favor forever. There is only life to the full in Christ, and as believers in Christ we have become new creations in Him from when we first believed and for eternity!

Okay, now we can begin the main readings of our plan: 2 Samuel 18:1-19:10 and John 20:1-31.

The One Year Bible, actually selects a daily highlighted passage, so you can write that passage down if you wish, or whatever verse speaks to your heart. Ask the Lord to help you memorize His word, and apply it to your life. Today’s highlighted verse is:

‘But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.’ John 20:30-31

You can see above that I wrote down part of our Proverbs verse 16:15, and John 20:30-31, but write down whatever the Lord puts on to your heart.

I is for Investigate.

This is the part of our time with the Lord where we want to spend a few minutes investigating the Word of God. Ask the Lord to help you discern what are these passages teaching you? Investigate what does this teach us about:

  1. God?
  2. The People in the Account?
  3. Yourself?
  4. How does this point to Jesus Christ?
  5. Other verses that come to mind?

I love that these questions bring us back to focusing on God 1st! I’ll save the reasoning for each question for a later time, but for now, we will use them as a guide to understanding God and His word. We can answer each question individually, or use them as a guide to help summarize what today’s overall reading is teaching us.

2 Samuel 18:1-19:10. Absalom’s defeat and death. We are jumping right into learning about King David, and his son Absalom. This is the tragic end of David’s 3rd son, Absalom. Catching us up quickly, in 1 Samuel we learn that King David has an amazing heart for the Lord, and he often seeks to honor Him; however, David is still a desperate sinner, and his sin has drastic consequences. The prophet Nathan warns David in 2 Samuel 12:11 that his own sons would rebel against him, and we see this played out in Absalom’s life. Absalom was blessed with handsome looks, charm, and being a prince to the throne; yet, this wasn’t enough for him! Absalom craved more power, and sought the death of his own father, King David, so that he could be king! Absalom had everything going for Him, but we see that everything without the Lord, ends in nothing but despair. Absalom suffers a humiliating death as his hair gets caught in a tree, and despite a promise to keep the young prince alive, Absalom is murdered by Joab. King David is absolutely distraught over the death of his son, despite his son’s disobedience and attempts to have him killed. Joab, the leader of David’s army, urges David to pull himself together and get back out there and congratulate the troops for defeating the enemy. And, the fickle crowd of Israelites, that had broken their allegiance with King David to follow Absalom, end up wanting David to come back and be their king.

John 20:1-31. The Resurrection. We join in John 20 at almost the very end of the 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). We find Mary Magdalene coming to see Jesus’ tomb in the early morning, and she finds that the stone had been rolled away! As Mary weeps, because not only has her Lord been murdered; but also, His body is now missing. She thinks a gardener asks her a question, “Who are you looking for?”; When she realize that she is actually speaking to a resurrected Jesus! Jesus tells her to go and find the disciples and tell them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” v17. Eight days later, when Thomas was with the other disciples, Jesus appeared again, and He said to Thomas. …“Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” v 27b-29

Action Bible John 20- As you are reading, it’s a great idea pairing the scripture with the Action Bible. The graphics in this book can really help with visualizing these accounts. My son loved reading through this Bible as a child and still loves it now as a teen. I definitely recommend picking this one up if you don’t already have it.

So, what does this teach us about God, the people, ourselves, point to Jesus Christ, and other verses that come to mind? There are SO many lessons here, and I pray that the Lord places exactly what He wants to teach us on our hearts. As I ask the Lord what He is teaching me about Himself, this is what I see:

Our King Jesus, unlike King David, is ALWAYS sinless. In fact, this is why He was able to pay the price for our sins. King David’s son died a sad death due to his own selfishness and vanity; but, our Heavenly Father’s Son died for us, selflessly, so that we could be freed from our sin and brought into an eternal inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade. (1 Peter 1:4). When we place our faith in the unseen God, we are not only blessed; but also, we are given eternal life, by the power of Jesus Christ’s name.

Other scripture that comes to mind:

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. – 1 Peter 2:9

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, ”and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, -1 Peter 1:3-4

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. -2 Corinthians 4:18

What did today’s reading teach you?

D is for Dwell. How can we apply the truth from God’s word into our lives? It’s easy to see how a selfish life like Absalom’s ends in destruction. I pray that we would seek to honor God, and place our faith in Jesus Christ to experience the power of His name in our lives! And, praise the Lord that we ARE spending time in His Word. By reading His Word and giving our hearts a chance to meditate on it and pray to Him, we are giving the Lord an opportunity to speak to us. I pray that the Lord will reveal all the areas we need to submit to His Word and obey.

E is for Engage in prayer. I encourage you to end your time with the Lord in prayer. We can praise God for who He is, and all that we have learned about Him today. I am so thankful that the Lord fulfilled His promise to us through King David, to bring His son Jesus to rescue us for eternity. Use this time to confess your sins to the Lord, and bring any requests that you have to Him.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. -1 John 1:9

Lord Jesus, I pray that this time will be fruitful for whomever seeks You through this plan. I pray that You and Your Holy Spirit will lead us by reading Your Holy Word, and by our prayers to You. Thank you for Your life-giving Word. We love you Lord. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Summer Bible Reading Countdown!

Precious friends,

Yay!! Congratulations! Many of us have just wrapped up another school year (and some are in the home-stretch, yes you can do it!!) Praise the Lord for another school year under our belts. 

We had a joyful year with wonderful accomplishments, sweet memories, and this year we also faced many challenges and heart-breaking trials. I’m sure as you reflect back over this school year, you are faced with many of these same emotions.

I thank the Lord that our emotions are often reminders of how much we need the Lord everyday. In our joy, suffering, and anxious thoughts, Jesus is in all the details of our lives! When we turn to Jesus Christ and cast our cares on Him, He can then calm our storms, and give us guidance in how to navigate our responsibilities, emotions, and provide the wisdom and comfort that we need!

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phillippians 4:7-9

I pray as we begin our summer that our great comforter, Jesus Christ, will comfort us with His peace that surpasses all understanding as we seek Him, and He will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus!

Okay, are you guys ready to RELAX? Yes, definitely we are!!  I want to encourage us to relax in all the ways, EXCEPT for in our relationship with the Lord. The summer can actually be a wonderful time to seek Him even more! Lord-willing, we will all have a little more freedom in our days. So, let’s use this summer as a time to lean into the Lord even MORE!

Lord please help us establish a daily habit of seeking YOU so when the busyness of school life rolls around again, we have our habit set in place, so we are ready to face another school year with YOU!

Our summer reading plan through The One year Bible, is an excellent way to have a daily plan for a summer with the Lord. 

When it comes to “God” goals, we definitely do not want to approach it in our own strength. Seeking the Lord, shouldn’t be a check list of getting things done, or thinking we are “better” Christians if we do so.

We want to approach the Lord in prayer first!

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

So, I encourage you to ASK the Lord in prayer to give you a heart that wants to seek Him this summer.

ASK the Lord to help you make time for Him this summer.

ASK the Lord to teach you HIS will this summer.

ASK the Lord to give you a heart of understanding this summer.

And, ASK the Lord to bring others around you to encourage you, and that you could also encourage others to spend time with the Lord in prayer, time reading His word, and in fellowship this summer!

Remembering to ASK the Lord first, is a great reminder that we really should seek the Lord first as we approach all situations in our life!

I have found that the first step in the “ABIDE” quiet time method outlined on your summer reading list, is so helpful for this reminder. The “A” in abide, stands for “Ask.”  We are going to learn more about the “Ask” step coming soon, but for now think of it as the reminder that in prayer we can ask the Lord to help us seek His will in all the situations of our lives.

“Indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:3-6

Proverbs 2 tells us that when we call out to the Lord for His insight and cry aloud to Him for understanding we will find the knowledge of God! Oh praise the Lord that when we earnestly seek Him, He graciously gives us His understanding!

So a few things that I want to encourage you in as we approach our summer in the word of God.

  1. I think you probably have figured it out by now: ASK! I’d love to encourage you to call out to the Lord, and ask Him in prayer to help you have a desire to seek Him and His word. We shouldn’t approach anything in life apart from God, and especially when talking about seeking Him. We really want the Lord to cultivate our heart and be the driving factor that allows us to know Him more, not doing this in our own strength! 

“Lord please help me know you more, Please help me make time in my day to spend with You, and help me understand Your word.” (Psalms 119 is my favorite for seeking a heart the desires God’s word.) The Lord will answer your prayer, and like Matthew 7:7 says, when we seek Christ, we will find Him! I’ve seen it in my own life, and the Lord will graciously answer your prayers too!

  1. Don’t let others or even yourself discourage you! 

It’s easy to be discouraged, especially when seeking Christ, and why is that? Well, it’s a spiritual battle and between our own selfish desires, others, and the enemy who does not want us to seek God. There is a lot preventing us from seeking Christ! So, on our behalf I’m crying out to the Lord for us now, and asking Him: “Lord Jesus please help us get in to your Word, and help us pray to you this summer.”  I want to encourage all of us to have a daily quiet time with the Lord, seeking Him in prayer and in His word for wisdom. And, I encourage you to join me in praying this as well!

Following the “ABIDE” method: Ask, Bible, Investigate, Dwell, and Engage, is a great tool in helping us form a daily habit of seeking Him in prayer, and applying His wonderful Word to our lives.

And, I really think that yes even sweet little 4th graders through 90+ year olds CAN read through The One Year Bible daily. 

I’ve had a few questions regarding this plan, so here’s a few FAQ’s that I would love to address:

  1. What if I don’t do this?  Of course there is no condemnation for not doing this, we are saved by Grace by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, and not by doing a daily quiet time, so of course you do not have to participate in this. 🙂 However, spending time with the Lord is essential to growing as a disciple of Christ, and if you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, your heart WILL want to spend more time with Him.  So, my suggestion is that you should pray about it. If you pray, and you don’t want to follow along, IT’S TOTALLY OKAY! Praise the Lord, that He answers our prayers and guides us. And, if you pray about getting to know Jesus this summer, and you want to start small we shared in the previous post about breaking it up, so I trust that the Lord will lead you in whatever is best. Reading any amount of scripture, God is going to use that in your life and bless you. However, if you seek the Lord and say “Lord I want to seek you and devote 15 minutes of reading the Bible daily this summer.” Then the Lord will surely come alongside you in that too.  And, remember there is always so much grace, so if you miss a day or 2, a week, or whatever it is, the Lord loves you, and He just wants you to seek Him. Remember, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
  2. This is TOO hard!! But, you guys are so smart! And, the one year bible is set up in 15 minute daily readings. How EASY is it to waste 15 minutes, or more like hours doing all sorts of things like: scrolling, video games, tv shows, shopping, playing games or reading other things? So, I know that we are ALL MORE than capable of reading the Bible for 15 minutes. But, again this is a desire that has to come from a heart that WANTS to spend time with the Lord. So, if you are approaching this like a check list to get done, or something you are dreading, then what’s the point? Spending time with the Lord, has to come from an inward desire to know Him more. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit lives in us, and He will guide us in navigating all things, especially when seeking His word. So tap into His power by crying out to Him. “Lord Jesus, help me seek you this summer. Teach me how to spend time with you everyday and read Your Word with understanding.”
  3. There’s no way you can do this? People can discourage us because they haven’t asked the Lord to help them in their own daily habit of getting into the word, or they can doubt our capabilities. So they might say this is going to be way too hard for you because it’s not something they themselves have sought the Lord in. So, this is a reminder that as we seek Christ, Jesus will help us accomplish all the things we could never do in our own strength. And, praise God for that, in our weakness, HE IS STRONG. We NEED Jesus in all things, and especially when it comes to seeking His word!
  4. I can’t start June 1. No problem, that’s totally okay! This is the amazing thing about the Bible, you can just jump right in at any time and the Lord will meet you right where you are!  And, always feel free to ask questions. I can’t wait to come alongside you all in Christ. Abiding together in Christ is obviously near and dear to my heart, and as we earnestly seek the Lord, He will bless us with His understanding. Lord-willing, later this summer, we will read Acts together and learn how the disciples came together in the early church and devoted themselves to teaching , fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers together, and how the Lord added to their number days by day those that were being saved. Acts 2. I pray that by asking the Lord to help us seek Him and His word this summer, that we will also begin a movement in the hearts of our generation and many will be saved!
  5. This seems boring. Seriously, the WORD OF GOD is Amazing! It’s living and it’s active. And, if you have given your life to Jesus, You will be amazed at all the wonderful things that you will learn through the Holy Spirit while seeking Him. Lord-willing, this summer we will be diving into the Old Testament, in 2nd Samuel and at the end of King David’s reign. Then we will head in to Kings where his son Solomon takes over, and then all the way through Job. These are REAL historical accounts, with REAL historical people, and their lives are truly more interesting than any Netflix movie that you can find! And, in the New Testament we will hit the very end of the Gospel of John, and then head into Acts to learn all about the early church. We will then begin Paul’s letters to the Christians in Rome, and finish with his letters to the church in Corinth of AD 55-57. The daily Psalms and Proverbs that we will read are short, and are a wonderful way to seek the heart and wisdom of God. Again, all of this has been designed to read in 15 minute increments for reading with children of all ages! WE TOTALLY GOT THIS!!

Okay, so if you have made it this far, there’s a good chance the Lord IS encouraging you to take on this goal this summer. 😉

 SO here’s a list of tips:

The One Year Bible
  1. All the summer dates are listed for you here, but you might find it helpful to purchase The one year Bible.  You can pick one up many versions, I even ordered a used one! I know for my kids, when they realized that the entire reading was actually only about 2-3 pages, as laid out in the One year Bible, they realized it’s TOTALLY doable, so this might be helpful for you as well!
  2. Listen to audio bible as you read. For me the is extremely helpful. I get easily distracted when I’m reading, so I go to the You Version app on my phone, and you can also access it on the computer here (click on the sound button), and I listen to the passage while I read it. I definitely recommend if you are an audio and visual learner like me!
  3. Read your study bible notes. After I read The One Year Bible, I go back to my study bible, and read the study notes and cross-references.  This might be a great thing for you to do as parents, so when you connect with your children on what they have read later in the day, you can help them with further understanding. And, there is actually a One Year Bible companion, its a shorter version of study notes, so this would be a great resource as well.
  4. Action bible.This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_5355.jpgHave you guys seen this Bible? We have loved it since my kids were little. Much of the Bible has been illustrated throughout these beautiful pages in a fun comic-strip setting. SO it’s a wonderful resource that you and your kids can visual see the words you are reading.
  5. Follow the ABIDE method outlined here, and more info on this to come, to help guide you in your quiet time. As we ASK the Lord in Prayer, Read the BIBLE, INVESTIGATE God, learn from the people in the account, see truths about ourselves and our desperate need for a Savior, DWELL on how to apply the truth of God’s word in our lives, and ENGAGE in prayer, our quiet times with the Lord can become a sweet habit that gives us an opportunity to seek HIS word and in Prayer everyday!
  6. Growing in the Son podcast. Christy Duff, wife of Jason Duff, the lead pastor at the Garden Fellowship Church in Indio, CA, has a wonderful podcast that is also going through the One Year Bible. You will love hearing her wonderful insights on the word of God

With the Lord’s help we CAN accomplish the most worthy of goals! I’m truly excited to see all the ways the Lord will prayerfully work through us, our friends, and family by reading His word and seeking Him this summer!
